Amazon Game Studios' New World enjoyed a very successful launch a little over a month ago, with a whopping total of over 700,000 concurrent players on Steam active on day one. In fact, there were so many players that Amazon had to quickly work through the lack of server availability for everyone up in queues, and more servers were added for all in just two days. Because each server has a limited capacity of around 2,000 players each, it didn't take long for New World players to take many of them at full capacity.

However, New World's population has been dwindling for a little while now, and while the game is still among the most played on Steam, the numbers are getting a bit lower by the day. This led to Amazon announcing that some New World servers will soon be merged due to the falling player base, and that may help as a short-term solution to the problem because of how the game is designed to take community effort into account for everyone's benefit.

A Reddit user by the name of Trevorjrt6 shared a post on the platform to address how important it is that Amazon's resolve to merge New World servers sees immediate action. The main reason is that servers with a low population will eventually see each settlement's stations downgraded to very low tiers due to how Invasions work and how not having active players to fight is awful. New World's Invasions are designed to be a community effort to take on powerful hordes of enemies and defend the settlements in epic battles, but for servers where the population is at an all-time low, it's hard to even resist for a few waves.

The result is that everything is downgraded to the detriment of all those players who are still active on that server, and some of the least active servers see peaks of 200 players at the very best. With New World server transfers being a thing, some other active players who don't want to be punished for their worlds being empty just pack their things and move elsewhere, hoping to find a more active community where they can carry on their business.

New World developers announced that the game is getting a much-needed combat update in the coming weeks, and it's not unlikely that Amazon will try and solve most of the current issues with it as well. This could mean that servers being merged is much closer than people think, which would be good news.

New World is available now on PC.
