After several beta tests and multiple delays, Amazon’s MMORPG New World finally had its full launch on September 28. With few new MMORPGs being released anymore, the game’s launch was a resounding success in terms of player numbers. New World immediately reached half a million players when servers went live and capped out at a peak player count of 801,642 today, according to Steam stats.

While the game has been praised for its action-focused combat system and player-driven economy, its launch hasn’t been without faults, either. Lengthy queue times to simply play New World has turned many potential gamers off of the title. One other major issue from New World’s beta has seemingly been carried over to the full release as well.

During the titles’ closed beta test in July, many players started having problems with New World bricking their EVGA RTX 3090 GPUs. The issues were possibly tied to the game’s menus having an uncapped framerate. Amazon released an official statement saying that while it had seen reports of problems, it had no indication of widespread issues. The company did cap the framerate on the game’s menu screen, however. EVGA also made an announcement stating that a small batch of RTX 3090s had poor soldering that lead to the failures during high load and that it had received around two dozen dead cards from players who had played the New World beta.

New-World-1

Now, custom PC manufacturer PowerGPU has released a tweet stating that some of its users have begun sending in emails regarding GPUs that are no longer working after playing the game’s full release. PC Gamer has also claimed that multiple community members have reached out to them regarding hardware errors while playing New World. This time, it seems the EVGA RTX 3090 and the Gigabyte RTX 3080 Ti are the victims, with problems being caused by players changing graphical settings in the title, causing high load GPU spikes which can cause the game to crash or graphics cards to outright fail.

With graphics cards being so difficult to obtain these days, having a game like New World causing massive hardware failures is very serious. An RTX 3090’s MSRP is about $1,499 USD, and that is if players are even able to find one. Current retail and scalper prices are much higher due to the GPU shortages going on.

Of course, New World isn’t the only title to have plenty of bugs upon release. CD Projekt Red’s hyped-up Cyberpunk 2077 was pulled from the PlayStation digital storefront due to bugs for a while. Still, a buggy game and a title that causes hardware failures are two very different things, and if New World is causing GPUs to brick, then Amazon needs to correct the problem quickly.
