To get refined metals for crafting weapons, armor, and more, players adventuring through New World will have to level up their Smelting skill. The process of converting raw resources into ready-to-use products is an important middle-step in the game's crafting mechanics, so players intending to become the best metalworkers will definitely find themselves in front of Smelters quite often.

The best way to wrap one's head around what is needed to get the best gear out of one's forge is to learn about the various types of metals in New World and how to obtain them. Just keep in mind to gather lots of Charcoal and Flux as they are a very common crafting component in Smelting.

Updated on October 22, 2021, by Reyadh Rahaman: Players looking to smelt better and better metals will need higher tier Smelters, which can be tough to find naturally, as each settlement and camp has roughly different tiered ones. Thankfully, players can increase the Smelter tier of their desired forge-related refining station in a way that's relatively intuitive and simple.

A good way to maximize one's efficiency when Smelting is to harvest a ton of materials before hitting up the appropriate tier of Smelter. This will cut down on trips to and from one's preferred ore-harvesting spots.

Steel Ingot

Steel Ingot Crafting Requirements

  • Must use a Tier 3 Smelter to craft
  • Must have a Smelting skill level of 50 or higher

Steel Ingot Crafting Recipe

  • 4 Iron Ingot
  • 2 Charcoal
  • 1 of any kind of Flux

About Steel Ingots

This Tier 3 refined metal is the first that will require players to include Flux as well as Charcoal into the recipe. Flux can be found from looting containers while exploring or from converting other secondary refining materials into it by using a Material Converter. The Charcoal will be easy to obtain as it can be made at any Tier 2 Smelter from Green Wood (harvested from the very common Young Trees).

Gold Ingots

About Gold Ingots

Gold is also a Tier 3 refined metal, and requires Flux to be smelted, but will be more expensive to craft due to the nature of Gold Ore being a bit harder to find than Iron Ore.

Starmetal Ingot

Starmetal Ingot Crafting Requirements

  • Must use a Tier 3 Smelter to craft
  • Must have a Smelting skill level of 100 or higher

Starmetal Ingot Crafting Recipe

  • 4 Starmetal Ore
  • 2 Steel Ingot
  • 2 Charcoal
  • 1 of any kind of Flux

About Starmetal Ingots

As the components get rarer and rarer, players will have to spend more time searching for resources than by a Smelter to find some Starmetal Ore if getting this Tier 4 metal is one's goal.

Platinum Ingot

Platinum Ingot Crafting Requirements

  • Must use a Tier 4 Smelter to craft
  • Must have a Smelting skill level of 100 or higher

Platinum Ingot Crafting Recipe

  • 4 Platinum Ore
  • 2 Gold Ingot
  • 1 of any kind of Flux

About Platinum Ingots

This light-colored Tier 4 metal will be needed for some higher-tier crafting recipes, though, getting enough to use will take a while as aspiring metalworkers climb the 'material pyramid'.

Orichalcum Ingot

Orichalcum Ingot Crafting Requirements

  • Must use a Tier 4 Smelter to craft
  • Must have a Smelting skill level of 150 or higher

Orichalcum Ingot Crafting Recipe

  • 4 Orichalcum Ore
  • 2 Starmetal Ingot
  • 2 Charcoal
  • 1 of any kind of Flux

About Orichalcum Ingots

One of two Tier 5 metals, Orichalcum Ingots are near the pinnacle of Smelting, requiring players to have accumulated a lot of levels in this skill before becoming craftable. Keep in mind that players will need a bunch of Orichalcum Ingots in order to obtain the next type of refined metal, the only one classified as "legendary".

Asmodeum

new world legendary metal asmodeum

Asmodeum Crafting Requirements

  • Must use a Tier 4 Smelter to craft
  • Must have a Smelting skill level of 200 or higher

Asmodeum Crafting Recipe

  • 4 Orichalcum Ingot
  • 2 Charcoal
  • 1 Tolvium
  • 1 Cinnabar
  • 1 Obsidian Flux

About Asmodeum

Besides ruining the naming conventions of the metals, this legendary resource stands out for other reasons. It is the only kind of ingot that needs other ingots of the same tier to be crafted. Furthermore, it needs a specific kind of Flux as well as some rarer secondary refining materials. This is another area where a Material Converter would be helpful, as obtaining some of these secondary refining materials solely from exploration can severely delay one's crafting goals.

How To Increase Smelter Tier In A Settlement

new world smelter

The only current way that players can increase the tier of a Smelter is by taking on Town Projects. These tasks are community-based and cannot often be tackled by an individual, making cumulative teamwork in a settlement important for achieving better goods via the Smelting skill.

About Town Projects

There are a variety of Town Projects in each settlement, and, in addition to increasing the Smelter tier, they allow for a huge number of positive changes including, but not restricted to, increasing the quality of facilities within a settlement's borders and bulking up its defenses.

The Town Project that players will want to focus on for increasing the Smelter tier of a settlement is known as the "Upgrade Settlement" Town Project. In addition to helping out with smelting pursuits, this task will increase the potential for many other refining and crafting skills as well. Just like with the rank of Smelters and other refining stations, this task has its own tiers. Each higher one corresponds directly to the quality of refining and crafting stations that will be available within a settlement's walls. The tiers of the Upgrade Settlement Town Project are as follows:

  • Tier 1 results in a settlement being a Hamlet
  • Tier 2 results in a settlement being a Village
  • Tier 3 results in a settlement being a Town
  • Tier 4 results in a settlement being a City
  • Tier 5 results in a settlement being a Capitol
