One thing all these players might not have looked into yet is how different types of damage in New World function, being so busy with crafting, PvP, and other diversions common on Aeternum. Talking about types of damage might feel strange in a game with no classes and a unique idea of what constitutes "magic" but we've put together a guide anyway.

Updated on December 21, 2021, by Kristy Ambrose: New World has been in circulation for a few months now, and it's been an exciting ride with some dizzying highs and lows. There have been some tweaks to the game that include more New World damage types with both old and new weapons, along with some changes to crafting and gameplay mechanics to reflect the changes. That some updates have made it necessary to update our original guide about damage types in New World.

Damage Perks in New World

In New World, players can use weapons, skills, and upgrades to damage both hostile enemies and other players with an array of different New World damage types. There are both physical and non-physical, or elemental, damage types. Enemies, elite bosses, and NPCs in the game can also have resistance against certain types of damage.

Any weapons that have a perk that provides elemental damage can do both elemental and physical damage in the same attack. Some types of damage are limited to certain weapons. Arcanists can mix different tinctures using water, oil, plants, and other ingredients to coat a weapon and grant them temporary buffs.

  • Arcane. Add Arcane damage to a weapon or armor using a Vial of Corrupted Essence. It makes sense since this type of power deals extra damage against Corrupted enemies.
  • Fire. Use a chunk of Niter while crafting a weapon to give it a fire damage perk. The Fire Staff, crafted at an Arcana Station, deals only Fire damage.
  • Ice. Use a Frozen Fang when crafting to add Chain Ice to any weapon. Aquamarine provides an Ice Ward for Armor. The Ice Gaunlet, which is crafted using the Arcana Skill, deals Ice damage exclusively.
  • Lightning. Make an amulet using a Shard of Sparkmetal to get an increased resistance against lightning damage when applied to armor, and the Chain Lightning ability when used to make a weapon.
  • Nature. The only elemental damage type in New World that no enemy can resist, even Angry Earth. It can be added to clothing or weapons using an Amber gemstone and can also be wielded by a Healing staff.
  • Void. The most recent addition to New World weapon damage types and the only other elemental power that can be applied to a Gauntlet, players can also make an amulet using a Vacant Corrupted Insignia to give their character extra Void damage resistance.

Non-Physical Damage Types in New World

For some of the best character builds, players have to have a range of abilities and New World damage types in order to ensure that they are never at a disadvantage no matter who they have to fight. This means also utilizing non-physical or magical damage types as well.

  • Arcane - +30% Damage to The Corrupted
  • Void - +15% Damage to Ancient Guardians and -40% Damage to The Corrupted and -40% Damage to The Lost and Drowned
  • Fire - +30% Damage to The Angry Earth and -40% Damage to Ancient Guardians
  • Ice - +15% Damage to The Lost and Drowned and -40% Damage to The Corrupted
  • Lightning - +30% Damage to Ancient Guardians and -40% Damage to The Angry Earth
  • Nature - +15% Damage to The Corrupted and +30% Damage to The Lost and Drowned

While some of these damage types are more viable for the best PvE and the best PvP builds in New World than others, players will want to ensure that they have a good spread of damage types available, especially when they plan to take on some Corrupted.
