One of the biggest criticisms that have evolved about Amazon's recent entry into the MMORPG universe is the lack of any imaginative quests. However, that's not the case with "Baited."

Baited is a quest in New World that players can start by speaking with an NPC named Dena Ruby near the Stolen Shores. It centers around catching two different aquatic creatures, one of which is a Snail. For those fans that may be having some trouble catching a Snail in New World, this guide contains a number of recommendations that will hopefully prove to be helpful.

Updated on November 26th, 2021, by Kristy Ambrose: The drama of New World continues, and while some players fuss over gold caps, exploit changes, and the lack of endgame content, others are enjoying the big, open world, filled with a wide variety of resources and crafting options. Some things about some of the Gathering skills have changed, and Fishing falls under that category of abilities. Snails are some of the most useful Uncommon items players tend to acquire in New World, so there are more reasons to seek them out than just to finish a quest. Knowing how to catch snails is an obscure but important skill in the vast open spaces of New World.

The Snails of Aeternum

New World Dark Forest
  • What. Snails are an Uncommon (green) item, which means they're higher than average quality than most of what players catch.
  • Where. Shallow freshwater areas are the best places to find Snails, especially marshes or grassy beaches. They are not saltwater creatures.
  • Why. The resources obtained from snails aren't exactly epic, but they are very useful when it comes to a variety of crafting and refining skills. They are used to make Snail Bait, which gives a medium boost to saltwater fishing.

A Fishing Pole

The first step toward catching a Snail in New World is to have some supplies on hand. Unsurprisingly, the most important item that a player needs to be in possession of is a fishing pole in New World, and even the simplest rod will do. Players can craft one and it's also easy to buy one from the Trading Post.

  • Wooden Fishing Pole. The lowest-level rod is made using greenwood and hemp fiber, making it one of the more complex tools to construct. It has a casting distance of 40 feet.
  • Treated Wood Fishing Pole. Requires some Engineering skills and more advanced crafting materials including lumber, course leather, and linen. It has a casting distance of 45 feet.
  • Aged Wood Fishing Pole. Gives the player a 75% better chance of catching rarer fish. It has a casting distance of 52 feet.
  • Wyrdwood Fishing Pole. Uses the magical Wyrdword as its main ingredient, a material unique to Aeternum and gives a 100% chance for fish that are Uncommon or better. It has a casting distance of 60 feet.
  • Ironwood Fishing Pole. Made of the very durable Ironwood, players will always get a fish that's Uncommon or better with this pole. It has a casting distance of 65 feet.

Fishing Pole Perks

The most common fishing perks are for certain times of the day or night. Other enchantments on fishing rods of higher quality include improvements to durability, casting distance, and chances of catching bigger, higher-quality fish. Players that are focused on catching snails in New World need a freshwater perk or one that guarantees better quality.

  • Daytime Colossus. Gives a better chance of catching larger fish during the daytime.
  • Freshwater Colossus. Gives a better chance of catching larger fish in freshwater.
  • Freshwater Brawn. An increase in line strength when fishing in freshwater.
  • Lucky Day. Gives a better chance of catching rarer fish during the daytime.
  • Lucky Night. Gives a better chance of catching rarer fish during the nighttime.
  • Moons Reach. An increase in cast distance during the nighttime.
  • Nighttime Colossus. Gives a better chance of catching larger fish during the nighttime.
  • Saltwater Colossus. Gives a better chance of catching larger fish in saltwater.
  • Saltwaters Brawn. An increase in line strength when fishing in saltwater.
  • Sturdy. Increases line durability by 10%, 20%, or 50% depending on the quality of the pole.
  • Suns Reach. Increase to Cast Distance during the daytime.

Bait - Optional But Helpful

The other item that can be helpful when it comes to catching snails is bait but it's not required. Any improvements granted by using bait with a fishing pole with stack with any existing enchantments, however, so there's no reason not to use some.

There are a number of good options to consider, and plenty of them are easy to acquire. Firefly Bait, for example, is perfectly suitable to catch Snails in New World, and it can be harvested from Briar in New World. Players can also use Woodlouse Bait if they prefer, and that can be collected from Bushes. Notably, harvesters and fisherfolk will not receive one of these baits every time that they interact with the aforementioned foliage, though they should not be too hard to find after a few tries.

Other kinds, like Bread Bait, can be looted from chests, enemies, or made at a simple campfire or Kitchen from food resources. Certain kinds of meat bait require seasonings and one other low-level ingredient, like sausages. Remember when crafting bait in a Kitchen that there are certain kinds for saltwater fishing and others intended only for freshwater.

Fishing Hotspots

As indicated by the quest description, these creatures come from freshwater, which means that fans should target lakes and rivers. Players that would like a specific recommendation are advised to check out the small body of water at Faith’s Bounty, which is east of Everfall Settlement, as Snails can be pulled out of that source.

After characters reach a certain fishing level, they will be able to track the various hotpots that are scattered through bodies of water throughout the vast island of Aeternum. With a rod and some bait in hand, New World players are now ready to head to a suitable location for catching Snails.

At this point, catching a Snail simply comes down to persistence, and players may need to cast many times before they obtain one. That said, fans that exercise patience will ultimately nab some Snails, and they can salvage them into Snail Bait in order to complete one half of the Baited quest. The other half of the quest requires that a similar process be followed with Clams, and players will be ready to claim their rewards when it is done.

With respect to what those rewards are, fans that finish the Baited quest will earn 870 XP, 78.75 Coins, 175 Standing, and 20 Azoth in New World. They will also receive the Battered Fisherman’s Gloves, which may prove to be stronger than the armor piece that the player has equipped at the time.

New World is available now on PC.
