[UPDATE: Amazon Games has issued an official statement on the matter: "Hundreds of thousands of people played in the New World Closed Beta yesterday, with millions of total hours played. We’ve received a few reports of players using high-performance graphics cards experiencing hardware failure when playing New World. New World makes standard DirectX calls as provided by the Windows API. We have seen no indication of widespread issues with 3090s, either in the beta or during our many months of alpha testing. The New World Closed Beta is safe to play. In order to further reassure players, we will implement a patch today that caps frames per second on our menu screen. We’re grateful for the support New World is receiving from players around the world, and will keep listening to their feedback throughout Beta and beyond." Original story follows.]

The Amazon-developed and published New World began its Closed Beta on July 20 at 9:30am PT/11:30am CT, with it lasting until August 2. The game is officially set to launch on August 31, but as a PC-only MMO, players need to be aware that CPUs/GPUs are already reportedly struggling with the game, sometimes from the main menu.

Of note, it seems that specifically the EVGA 3090 FTW3 is bricking with the game very quickly. It seems most of the reports are focused on this 3090, but given that 3090 graphic cards are still dealing with shortages, it may be a bit of a "BUYER AWARE" problem for many folks.

As of this writing, the New World beta hasn't been going for a full 24 hours yet. However, there are forums all over the internet indicating various problems. New World's menu alone is having players' PCs make weird noises, become extremely hot, crash the game, and more. Problems like these may have a variety of quick fixes depending on the set-up, but the reports run the gamut from the 2060-3080. While some may deem it unplayable for them and move on, 3090 users are having the worst of it.

There are as many reports, including from well-known Twitch streamer Gladd, of the EVGA 3090 FTW3 completely bricking upon playing the New World beta. Some are able to check it out for a couple of hours, some have only made it 30 minutes into the game, and some happen with the game's menu. Because the EVGA 3090 graphics card is getting the worst of it, some think it's a problem with this specific manufacturing, as while the reports are rampant, some with lower graphics card or non-EVGA cards seem to be working fine. Overall, it's a strange problem that everyone should be aware of, and actual details of the problem have yet come to light. If this is happening within 24 hours, the natural question is if something similar will happen to other cards the longer the game is played.

As of this writing, neither Amazon nor the EVGA Corporation have issued a statement on the matter. Players interested in the beta should be cautious, and those who have encountered problems ought to report them/try to get a replacement GPU as soon as they can. One of the many points of betas, including the New World beta, is to find bugs and the like, but this may be a bit bigger than many expected. For now, at the very least, 3090 owners should avoid the New World beta until an announcement is made.

New World will launch on August 31, 2021 for PC.
