A couple of days ago, Nintendo released the 10.0.0 firmware update for the Switch that added some significant quality of life updates for the three-year-old hybrid console. However, apart from Animal Crossing: New Horizons icons and button remapping, it now appears that the new firmware update is hiding a pretty major secret.

According to a social media post by Twitter user Mike Heskin, the 10.0.0 firmware update for the Nintendo Switch includes preliminary support for a new unannounced dual-screen model. This was discovered after hackers datamined the new update, which revealed the model number "nx-abcd." Although this may appear fake, it is worth noting that the model number for the original Switch is nx-abca and the Switch Lite, nx-abcb. At the moment, if this claim turns out to be true, it is hard to imagine how Nintendo plans to utilize a second screen on the Nintendo Switch.

It is possible that Nintendo is designing a new model that has a clamshell design similar to the 3DS, but given the superior touchscreen functionality of the Switch, this may be unlikely. However, it is also possible that the second screen that dataminers reportedly discovered is not a physical screen on the Switch itself, but support for connectivity for an external screen such as a smartphone. However, given that Nintendo still hasn't commented about these claims, players should take this information with a grain of salt.

Speculation about a new model of the Nintendo Switch has been prevalent online ever since the release of the Nintendo Switch Lite and the refresh of the original Switch with a better battery. For quite some time now, there have been claims that Nintendo is releasing a Pro version of the Switch, similar to how the company upgraded the 3DS with the 3DS XL. However, nothing concrete came out of this rumor especially when Nintendo itself announced last January that it has no plans of releasing a new model of the Nintendo Switch this year.

It is still unclear if the new model number discovered by dataminers is the long-awaited Switch Pro. However, given that the references about it suggest that the dual-screen console is still in development, it is expected that this new Switch model, if true, won't see the light of day this year especially with all the production delays that Nintendo, and other industries worldwide are experiencing due to the coronavirus pandemic.
