Despite the challenges of the pandemic, or perhaps because of it, South Park fans have seen a strong end to 2021. Not only has the beloved series run multiple specials and episodes based on the pandemic, but creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone signed a deal with Viacom last year that, among other endeavors like a documentary and a new weed company, announced a new South Park game.

Described only as a “3D game set in the South Park universe,” that front has been incredibly quiet since then. This makes sense given how early the idea for the game likely was, but it does seem that new details are slowly emerging. This new South Park game is developed “in-house” by South Park Digital Studios, but a new job listing seems to suggest it’s getting some help from Question Games.

Question Games, though only having released two games, is composed of developers who worked on Dishonored, the entire BioShock trilogy, and—perhaps most importantly here—South Park: The Stick of Truth and South Park: Fractured But Whole. It recently posted a job listing looking for a lead level designer, which is a paid full-time position in a collaborative and remote environment. Most of the job listing is rather straightforward but one detail stands out—“previous multiplayer level design work at a lead or senior-equivalent position is required.”

The job listing also mentions a requirement to have shipped at least one multiplayer game, though the rest of the ad doesn’t really go beyond what one could expect. As such, it’s unclear whether this position is to create an entire multiplayer game in the South Park universe or simply introduce a new South Park game with online, multiplayer components. It would be interesting if it were the latter, as many are hoping this new South Park game takes the best elements from the single-player Stick of Truth and Fractured But Whole game, and dials them to 11.

Multiplayer wouldn’t stop the developer from telling a strong South Park story, even if it proved to be a full multiplayer game, but the franchise itself seems to lean toward a single-player game with multiplayer options. This could be co-op levels or minor PvP elements; really, there’s no limit in this particular universe. Either way, with the aforementioned $900 million dollar deal for South Park, it’s clear the franchise is going nowhere anytime soon.

A new South Park game is known to be in development.
