A new trailer for the upcoming Slam Dunk movie titled THE FIRST SLAM DUNK has been revealed, and with it comes the introduction of a brand-new cast for the series' main characters. The film is the franchise's first since 1995, and it is a fresh approach to the Slam Dunk franchise as the trailer reveals its computer-generated approach to the animation and a first glance at the staff who will be composing the music for the film.

Toei Animation initially showcased the new trailer in a livestream on their YouTube channel, and it has amassed over two million views over the course of the weekend. THE FIRST SLAM DUNK is scheduled to premiere in Japanese theatres on December 3.

The new film overhauls both the sound and the visuals of the Slam Dunk series, with the trailer revealing some highly dynamic and artistic cuts from the upcoming film. The new cast who will be voicing the Shohoku High School Basketball Team are:

  • Subaru Kimura (Todo Aoi, JUJUTSU KAISEN) as Hanamichi Sakuragi
  • Shin'ichirō Kamio (Makoto Katai, Komi Can't Communicate) as Kaede Rukawa;
  • Kenta Miyake (All Might, My Hero Academia) will play the captain of the Shohoku Basketball Team, Takenori Akagi
  • Shugo Nakamura (Gin Gagamaru, BLUELOCK) cast as Ryota Miyagi;
  • Jun Kasama (Hiroshi Kuchiki, Ahiru no Sora) in the role of Hisashi Mitsui

The opening and ending themes of the new Slam Dunk movie will be performed by The Birthday and 10-FEET respectively, with 10-FEET members Takuma and Satoshi Takebe also involved in composing music for the film. Sound direction for the film is the joint effort of Yota Tsuruoka and Koji Kasamatsu.

Other staff members involved in THE FIRST SLAM DUNK film project include series author Takehiko Inoue (Vagaboond), who is directing the film and writing the script. He is working alongside character designer and animation director Yasuyuki Ebara, with CG direction and production by Daiki Nakazawa and Yūta Ogura respectively.

The upcoming film is based on the highly successful manga created by which was serialized in Shonen Jump from 1990 to 1996, spanning 31 volumes. It is highly regarded as one of the titles that carried Shonen Jump magazine during its "Golden Age". The series' anime adaptation aired between 1993 and 1996, running for 101 episodes. The franchise has also spawned four anime films; two released in 1994, and two in 1995; the last of which released in July 1995. The Slam Dunk story follows the red-haired delinquent Hanamichi Sakuragi, who has a long history of being rejected by the girls he's interested in. After his latest heartbreak, Sakuragi finds himself in despair once more; however, he soon meets his latest crush, Haruko Akagi, who is heavily engrossed in the sport of basketball.

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK will be opening in Japan on December 3, and will have IMAX screenings in over 40 cinemas across the country, with Dolby Cinema screenings to follow from December 10. The film marks the last film release from Toei Animation in 2022, closing off a highly successful year for the production studio.
