An earnings call from THQ Nordic has revealed news that will make fans of the Saints Row series very happy: Volition is reportedly "deep" in development of a brand-new Saints Row title, though more information about the upcoming game wasn't discussed during the corporate conference call.

Former series director Scott Phillips had speculated that the Saints Row was due for a comeback, and that has now been confirmed with a successor to Saints Row 4 now officially in development. This new game comes after Volition attempted to create a spinoff game called Agents of Mayhem that performed poorly in terms of both sales and reviews, leading to layoffs at Volition.

It's been some six years since the last Saints Row released, with Saints Row 4 putting players in the boots of the gang's leader shortly after he was elected President. The game entertained with incredulous weapons like the Dubstep Gun, building on the theme that each Saints Row game grew a little bit more "out there" than the last. The series got its start as a direct competitor to Grand Theft Auto, but found success in going down a stranger, more sci-fi oriented path.

Of course, that isn't to say that Saints Row fans have spent the last few years without any new attachments to the open-world IP: a Saints Row movie is currently in the planning stages, and it's attached to Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray. The film is currently being written by Greg Russo, who is also working on another game-to-movie adaption in regards to a Mortal Kombat reboot.

THQ Nordic didn't go into any more details regarding the investment call, but instead moved on to other topics of discussion like an all-new TimeSplitters game. Fans can likely expect more details about the new Saints Row title to come out in the coming months.
