New Releases October 17 Through 23, 2010

By | 6 years ago

Welcome back, friends, and prepare yourselves. The full force of the holiday release season is on display this week, as a veritable army of high profile, eagerly anticipated games march to retail. They will not be denied, they can not be resisted. They are coming for your spare time. And your wallet.

Many weeks, a couple of big games — say, Kirby’s Epic Yarn and Fallout: New Vegas — would be plenty to keep gamers busy. But this week gamers are going to have a much tougher set of decisions to make. EA Sports MMA and Vanquish are obvious contenders for purchase, but what about DJ Hero 2? Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 is coming to take on the sublime FIFA 11, and we haven’t even begun to concider the curiosities, like Rock of the Dead and Power Gig: Rise of the Six String. Plus Costume Quest. Plus Super Meat Boy!

All we can do is try to stay calm, and evaluate these games one at a time. So take a look at the new releases for October 16 through 23, 2010, broken out by platform and date.

Nearly a year ago, Nintendo set the side-scrolling, retro-flavored New Super Mario Bros. Wii loose upon the world. Since that time, the game has sold well over 10 million copies. It should come as no surprise that Nintendo is hoping to recreate that success with another of its shopworn characters, and first up is that paragon of cuteness, Kirby. One of Nintendo’s two big holiday releases, Kirby’s Epic Yarn wraps the amorphous pink blob in a genuinely unique visual style that is intimately tied to the game’s mechanics. This is one great looking Wii game, as evidenced by the trailers that have been released. Game Rant was impressed by Epic Yarn at E3, and again at PAX. This one is worth checking out.

For gamers who prefer the post-apocalyptic wasteland to pastel prints, look no further than Fallout: New Vegas. The game has been extensively previewed in series of developer diaries from Obsidian Entertainment. As a follow-up to Bethesda’s acclaimed Fallout 3, New Vegas has a lot to live up to. But with a big name voice cast and extensive customization options, the game just might deliver.

Quick Takes:

DJ Hero 2 looks to have addressed many of the shortcomings of the original game, with a more diverse setlist, an expanded career mode, day one DLC support, and a fleshed out multiplayer experience.

Vanquish brings Shinji Mikami’s stylish, hard action formula to a futuristic third person shooter. The lack of multiplayer may be a deal breaker for some, but Vanquish’s awesome visual design and fast paced play impressed Game Rant during our hand’s on time with the game.

Costume Quest is the new, downloadable game from Tim Schafer’s Double Fine. For many people, that’s all the recommendation necessary. For everyone else, Costume Quest is a Halloween themed RPG with a charming graphical style and tons of humor.

Finally, Super Meat Boy is a super hard XBLA game, and it has the best trailer ever.

As always, we want to hear from you. Which games are you picking up this week? What games are you not buying this week that you wish you could?
