Following last week’s relatively bountiful batch of new releases, this week’s crop is looking a little short in the numbers department. Of course, quality is better than quantity any day, and this week’s games look primed to deliver on that count.

PlayStation 3 owners are in for a real treat this week with LittleBigPlanet 2 and Mass Effect 2 both on the way. Square Enix’s futuristic Mindjack, for both PlayStation 3 and 360, will also be making its retail debut. And for the five of you who have yet to play it, Plants vs. Zombies hits the DS this week, making its domination of all gaming platforms complete.

Take a look at the new releases for January 16 through 22, 2011, broken out by platform and date.

Media Molecule’s LittleBigPlanet 2 towers over this week’s new releases like a skyscraper constructed of sofa cushions. Though many were disappointed when the game was delayed last year, players are sure to reap the benefits of that extra development time now that the game is finally hitting store shelves. Whether or not LittleBigPlanet 2 sets any new world records, the Grabinator, the Sackbots, and voice recording should all contribute to making the sequel everything its predecessor was and more. LittleBigPlanet 2 will be in stores January 18, 2011.

PlayStation 3 players have been waiting a long time for their chance to play Mass Effect 2. That wait ends this week as the enhanced port of the Xbox 360 classic finally comes to Sony’s system. Mass Effect 2 for PlayStation 3 features a new game engine, a ton of free content not included in the original, and the option of digital purchase. Now PlayStation 3 owners can see for themselves why the game was nominated for Game Rant’s Game of the Year Award. Mass Effect 2 flies to retail January 18, 2011.

As always, we want to hear from you. Which of this week’s new releases are you planning on picking up? Which games on the horizon are you most looking forward to?
