New Releases April 17 Through 23, 2011

What a week this is going to be! It’s been slow going for much of April, but now things are definitely shaping up. No fewer than three big, big games are hitting this week, and no matter what consoles you own, there is something interesting on offer.

After what seems an almost interminable wait, Portal 2 finally goes on sale this week. Fighting fans have the gloriously M rated Mortal Kombat to look forward to. PlayStation 3 owning tactical shooter fans have the long anticipated SOCOM 4 to occupy their time, and the Year of the Shooter finally comes to Nintendo’s Wii with the delayed release of Conduit 2.

Those games alone should be enough, but there are yet others set to be released before the week’s end. Take a look at the new releases for April 17 though 23, 2011, broken out by platform and date.

Is there a game from the past few years held in higher esteem than the original Portal? Innovative mechanics and some of the sharpest, funniest writing ever featured in a game combined to create an experience like no other. Now, more than three years later, gamers finally get another chance to face off against GlaDOS and Aperture Science. If the game turns out to be half as entertaining as the series of commercials (Bot Trust, Turrets) that proceeded it, that would be enough for most people. Add in co-op multiplayer, Steam integration on PS3, the voice talents of Stephen Merchant and a new song from Jonathan Coulton, and how can the game go wrong? Portal 2 releases April 19, 2011, for Mac, PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

It’s already been a great year for fighting games, thanks largely to the enormously fun Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Now, a new challenger has appeared. Grisly, gory, and gruesome, Mortal Kombat returns this week with a great roster of characters and some revamped game modes including the Challenge Tower. The original Mortal Kombat helped usher in the first golden age of fighting games all those years ago. Can the newest entry add to the genre’s resurgence? Mortal Kombat releases April 19, 2011, for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

There has already been a SOCOM game released for the PlayStation 3, SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation developed by Slant Six games, who are now working on the upcoming Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. Similarly, SOCOM creator Zipper Interactive has released a PlayStation 3 game, the multiplayer extravaganza MAG. But there has not been a Zipper Interactive developed SOCOM title on PS3 until now. SOCOM 4 is that game, and with a compelling single player campaign and an expansive online multiplayer mode, it just might restore the series to its former glory. SOCOM 4 releases April 19, 2011, for the PlayStation 3.

As always, we want to hear from you. What games will you be picking up this week? What upcoming games are you most looking forward to?
