New Releases April 10 Through 16, 2011

By | 6 years ago

If last week was an out and out lull, perhaps it’s better to think of this week as the calm before the storm. No, there probably aren’t any games you’ve been waiting all year for coming out this week, but if you haven’t yet decided between Portal 2, Mortal Kombat, and SOCOM 4 — all of them are due next week — now is probably the time.

Meanwhile, an interesting assortment of odds and ends is on offer this week, arguably headlined by Michael Jackson: The Experience. The Nintendo 3DS sees its first new games since launch with Ubisoft’s Raving Rabbids: Travel in Time and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell 3D. Gameloft brings the Diablo-esque Dungeon Hunter: Alliance to PSN, and Rio nicely fills the role of kid’s licensed movie tie-in for the week.

Of course, there are other titles debuting this week. Take a look at the new releases for April 10 through 16, 2011, broken out by platform and date.

Quick question: which of this week’s new releases has already sold over 2 million copies worldwide? If you answered Michael Jackson The Experience, then congratulations — you’ve been paying attention. The game was released for the Nintendo Wii, DS, and the Sony PSP last November, and has already racked up sales that most games would envy. This week, The Experience comes to the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, though it might be more telling to say that it’s coming to the Move and Kinect. Sure, this one may not be pitched at the hardcore, but as we said in our Michael Jackson: The Experience for Kinect preview, the King of Pop’s many, many fans might just snatch this one up on sight. Michael Jackson: The Experience will be available April 12, 2011.

Ubisoft stated early on that they would be among the strongest supporters of Nintendo’s 3DS once it arrived, with eight games due in the first half of 2011. So far, they’ve made good on their word, having delivered some solid games like Rayman 3D and Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars. Then again, they also loosed Asphalt 3D upon the world. Where will Raving Rabbids: Travel in Time and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell 3D sit in the scheme of things? You’ll know when we do. Raving Rabbids: Travel in Time and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell 3D both release April 10, 2011.

The mobile gamers reading this may well know that Apshalt 3D started out as an iPhone game from Gameloft. This week another Gameloft property makes the jump from mobile to console, though hopefully to much better effect, when Dungeon Hunter: Alliance drops for the PlayStation 3 on PSN. Promising a hack and slash, loot-crazed action RPG not terribly far removed from Torchlight, Dungeon Hunter: Alliance also has the good sense to include co-op for up to four players. The Dungeon Hunter games have been well recieved on iPhone; could they be even better on PlayStation 3? Dungeon Hunter: Alliance will be available April 12, 2011.

As always, we want to hear from you. What games will you be playing this week? And which of next week’s big three releases are you most looking forward to?
