New Releases May 1 Through 7, 2011

Greetings, Ranters, and welcome to May. The first week of the fifth month brings a solid lineup of games that is neither the mother-load of a few weeks ago (Portal 2, SOCOM 4, Mortal Kombat) nor the wasteland of last week (though I still think the Kinect Sports Calorie Challenge looks kind of great).

The best selling title of the week is all but certain to be the Call of Duty: Black Ops — Escalation map pack. PlayStation 3 owners can look forward to the belated release of MotorStorm Apocalypse. And pretty much any one with any interest whatsoever should be able to find a copy of Thor: God of Thunder to pop into their game-playing machine of choice.

Of course, there are many more titles to choose from. Take a look at the new release for May 1 through 7, 2011, broken out by platform and date.

Microsoft Xbox 360

Nintendo DS

Nintendo Wii

Sony PlayStation 3

Sony PSP

  • Me Monstar: Hear Me Roar! 5/5

is the second map pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops. Like the First Strike map pack, Escalation offers four new multiplayer maps in addition to a new Zombie level (Call of the Dead), and this time some well known faces are along for the ride. At 1200 MS Points, they aren’t exactly giving these things away, but somehow I don’t think the CoD community is apt to mind much. As with First Strike, Escalation will be exclusive to the Xbox 360 for 30 days, so PlayStation 3 and PC players will have to hold on just a bit longer. The Call of Duty: Black Ops — Escalation map pack will be available May 3, 2011.

Originally slated to release earlier in the Spring, MotorStorm Apocalypse is one of several games delayed by the tragic earthquake in Japan. The prospect of racing through a city in the throes of a massive natural disaster would likely have hit a little close to home for anyone affected by the quake, and as a result Sony tactfully held off on the game’s release. Now that we have a little distance from the event, the game is finally being released. Apocalypse’s urban setting is pretty far removed from the South Pacific island setting of the series’ last iteration, MotorStorm Pacific Rim. Will Apocalypse’s exaggerated physics and disaster-inclusive course design have what it takes to dethrone the current king of arcade racing, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit? Stay tuned to Game Rant for the final word. MotorStorm Apocalypse releases May 3, 2011.

Though they would probably not be the first games to jump to mind when discussing the publisher, Sega does have some history creating games based on blockbuster Marvel superhero movies. Unfortunately, that history is based on the Iron Man games, which even the most die-hard Sega supporter has got to admit were not particularly good. In an effort to turn things around, Sega is this week releasing a rash of games based on the soon to be released, Kenneth Branagh directed Thor. Will their efforts be rewarded, or should Sega stick to making Sonic games? Thor: God of Thunder releases May 3, 2011, for Xbox 360, Wii, DS, and PlayStation 3.

As always, we want to hear from you. What games will you be buying this week? What games on the horizon are you most looking forward to?
