Players will unlock the Sands (Day) course in New Pokemon Snap once they have reached research level two in the Jungle (Night) course and unlocked their first two types of Illumina Orbs. At this point, both Sweltering Sands and Blushing Beach will be unlocked, meaning that players can choose which route to take. Sweltering Sands is perhaps the shorter of the two, although as players have to complete both to progress the story, it doesn't really matter which one they tackle first.

The course features 17 different Pokemon, ten of which can be photographed on the first run. The rest will require players to raise their research level for the course, although as all of the additional five Pokemon show up in other courses, there's no real need to return to the course after the initial run unless players are aiming for 100% completion in New Pokemon Snap. Those who are can at least take solace in the fact that the course is both short and simple and so shouldn't take too long to master.

Every Pokemon In Sweltering Sands (Day)

A complete map of the Sweltering Sands (Day) course in New Pokemon Snap

Research Level 1

  • Skorupi - There are quite a few Skorupi scurrying around in the opening section of the course, a few of which will need to be tempted out of the ground with Fluffruit. One shows up once the sandstorm clears and a Mandibuzz will drop another one nearby as players approach.
  • Heliolisk - Heliolisk appears in a few different spots in the Sands (Day) course, although the easiest one to get a good photograph in is right at the beginning slightly to the left of the starting position. There's another in the center of the oasis and a final one sleeping in the sand as players enter the final area on the main route.
  • Cacnea - There are a pair of Cacnea hanging around on one of the first sand dunes that players come to. There are a few more on the left near one of the big sandstorms too. If players use scan to make them start rolling, two will also show up at the end of the course.
  • Mandibuzz - The Sands (Day) course is home to numerous Mandibuzz, the first of which can be found flying around the big sandstorm in the opening section. There's another right as players enter the second area and loads more along the alternate route.
  • Flygon - In order to see Flygon, players will first need to light the three Crystabloom flowers around the base of the big sandstorm. As players won't have access to Illumina Orbs until after visiting Sands (Night) though, it's not possible to see it on the first few runs. Once unlocked though, throwing a Fluffruit at it will also make it show up in the final section of the course.
  • Lycanroc - Lycanroc can be seen on top of a cliff over on the right as players enter the second section. There are much better photo opportunities at research level 2 though once the course's alternate route has been unlocked. One also shows up on the default route near the Hippowdown at this time too.
  • Hippowdon - There are Hippowdon in the second and third sections, two of which are sleeping and blocking off access to the course's alternate route at research level 1.
  • Torchic - Torchic shows up in the second section near the pool of water. It's hard to miss as it's directly in front of the player. Hitting both it and Hippowdon with Illumina Orbs will cause a unique interaction, as too will hitting Torchic a Fluffruit straight after illuminating it.
  • Magikarp - There's a single Magikarp swimming around in the oasis in the central section of the course, although getting it to actually show itself can be a little tricky. Given how common they are though, this shouldn't be an issue for most.
  • Vivillon - Some sandstorm pattern Vivillon can be found flying around in the final section of the course near the first big crater.
  • Trapinch - There are a few Trapinch in a crater in the final section of the course. Throwing a Fluffruit in (or having Flygon drop one) will lead to them popping out. Pinging Scorbunny with an Illumina Orb will also cause one to show up after it starts digging and there are some in the final crater before the exit which will climb out if players throw a few Fluffruit in there.
  • Pinsir - Pinsir is sticking out of the ground in one of the other craters in the final section. Hitting it with a Fluffruit will make it jump out.

Research Level 2

  • Scorbunny - There's a rock with some footprints near it over to the right of the starting position. Throwing a Fluffruit behind it will cause Scorbunny to come out and this will also make it appear in the final section too.
  • Tyranitar - Once players reach research level 2, the two sleeping Hippowdown will wake up which will allow players to scan the area and take an alternate route. Tyranitar will be directly in front of them after doing so. Hitting it with an Illumina Orb after Lycanroc runs behind the rock will cause it to smash its way through and run after it.
  • Onix - Also on the alternate route, there's a pack of Onix hanging around in the open area right before where players exit the course. They're so big, it would be difficult to miss them.

Research Level 3

  • Silicobra - If players stick to the original route, they'll pass a rustling bush near where Torchic hangs out. Hitting this with a Fluffruit will cause Silicobra to pop out of the ground. It will dive back in almost immediately, but its head will be sticking out of the sand over by the Crystabloom near the craters a little later on and hitting it directly with another Fluffruit will bring it right back out.
  • Minior - There are two Minior buried in the sand in the opening section. Much like the nighttime version of the course, players will need to use scan to find their exact locations and then hit the spots that are identified with Illumina Orbs to make the Pokemon come out. If players use scan to move the two Cacnea in the starting area, they'll show up again at the end of the course chasing the two Minior near the craters.
