For years fans have experienced a variety of different Pokemon spin-off titles, from Pokemon Pinball, to Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, but it that none have stuck with many fans over time quite as much as Pokemon Snap. Needless to say, fans were ecstatic when they learned the on-rails photography game would receive a sequel on the Nintendo Switch in New Pokemon Snap.

While the original Pokemon Snap game on the Nintendo 64 included only a fraction of the existing 151 monsters at the time, the new game is set to include over 200 Pokemon spanning across all eight Generations. It's hard not to overlook the 22-year-long gap between Pokemon Snap titles, but an interview with New Pokemon Snap's director reveals that New Pokemon Snap isn't an entirely new idea.

In an interview with UK video game news outlet GameCentral, New Pokemon Snap director Haruki Suzaki from Bandai Namco Studios spoke on the origins of the project, the process of choosing which Pokemon will appear in the upcoming game, and more. When asked why it took so long for a Pokemon Snap sequel to be made, Suzaki recalled hearing about several attempts to revive the series in the past.

It seems that for one reason or another, plans to create a new Pokemon Snap game always ended up falling through, and one reason could have been hardware limitations. Details on the failed attempts at bringing back Pokemon Snap were not revealed, but the director explained that in the 20-odd years since the release of the original Nintendo 64 game, video game hardware and photography have both changed drastically. It seems that with advancements in technology in both realms, the Nintendo Switch was the perfect platform to revive Pokemon Snap on.

Earlier this week, Nintendo and Fujifilm announced a collaboration brining fans Nintendo Switch compatibility with the Instax Mini Printer. The device will allow players to print polaroid photographs of their Nintendo Switch screenshots. Additionally, Fujifilm will release an Instax Mini Printer with a Pikachu-themed silicone case on the same day as New Pokemon Snap.

The Pokemon franchise celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, which has brought fans new promotions, announcements, and more. New Pokemon Snap's April 30 release date is mere days away now, and fans are more excited than ever to explore the vast Lental region while snapping photos of their favorite monsters.
