In major news, The Pokemon Company announced Monday morning that it is partnering with Tencent to develop a new Pokemon game. The new game remains untitled but will be developed by Tencent's flagship TiMi studio. TiMi is best known for creating the hugely successful MOBA Arena of Valor. This is the first development partnership between Tencent and The Pokemon Company, which has previously partnered with NetEase for its Chinese endeavors.

No official details about Tencent's Pokemon game are yet known, but initial details point to the game being a mobile title. There's also a possibility of it being a Nintendo Switch game, as Tencent recently partnered with Nintendo to release the Switch in the Chinese market. However, given Tencent's development history and The Pokemon Company's recent partnership efforts a mobile game is much more likely.

Whether Tencent's new Pokemon game will be released worldwide is also a question worth asking. In recent months, Tencent leadership has made clear that building out its gaming sector with a "much more global perspective" is a goal for the company. Examples of this include PUBG Mobile, which has been broadly successful outside of China. If there's a brand worth bringing worldwide, however, it doesn't get much better than Pokemon.

Pokemon also isn't Tencent's only major licensed franchise with global appeal. Tencent has also recently acquired the license to develop a Call of Duty Mobile game in partnership with Activision, as well as a Street Fighter Online game licensed from Capcom. Tencent appears to be preparing for a major global push with its mobile game lineup.

The Pokemon Company continues to be increasingly liberal with its IP, particularly with regards to mobile games. Since Pokemon Go's release in 2016, other mobile game releases include Magikarp Jump, Pokemon Quest, and the upcoming Pokemon Masters and Pokemon Sleep. Tencent's Pokemon game will be just the latest expansion of the ever-growing franchise.

Tencent's untitled Pokemon game has no current release date or confirmed supported platforms.
