The Nintendo Switch has been largely dry when it comes to the Mario Kart scene, which while it has not stopped the console from seeing sales numbers in the millions, is a major drag for people getting sick of Mario Kart 8. A reliable source has indicated that this may be about to change, however, and whisperings have surfaced of a new entry in the beloved game series being just around the corner (relatively speaking).

The source in question is an insider to Nintendo's inner workings who goes by Sabi on Twitter. Sabi is a well-known leaker, and while this rumor came on the back of some disappointing news, in terms of Mario Kart, this might be just what people need to hold onto hope.

Be warned: everything following is still rumor at this point, even if it is from a source who has been reliable in the past. According to Sabi, there is a game that is likely to release this year for the Nintendo Switch that prominently features tires, which has led some to speculation that this means Mario Kart. It would make a lot of sense for a new Mario Kart game to hit the Switch now for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the poor reception of Mario Kart Tour. The other possibility, of course, is that there will soon be an announcement of the release date for Speedway Racing, which may disappoint Mario Kart fans, but will no doubt be good news for anyone who loves Daytona.

Another factor that lends some credence to Sabi's word is their previous leaks, one of which includes news about Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2. Sabi has said that work on the game is proving more time consuming than anticipated, and as a result, Breath of the Wild 2's release will probably be pushed back to next year. If that turns out to be the case, another beloved Nintendo franchise game would certainly help soothe the wait for fans, which makes another compelling reason news of a new Mario Kart may soon be on the way.

Recently, Sabi also revealed that there are whisperings of a possible Wonderful 101 port for the Switch. Everyone may think the rumored big Wii U exclusive coming to the Switch is Super Mario 3D World, but there are those who hold out hope that it will be Platinum's superhero extravaganza.

A new Mario Kart game is rumored to be in development.
