Crystal Dynamics' The Legacy of Kain series is both a storied and a somewhat sad one, as it hasn't seen a follow-up entry since the developer and parent company Square Enix released Legacy of Kain: Defiance in 2003. Nearly a decade and a half later, and it looks as though Crystal Dynamics could be gearing up to revive the franchise in a move similar to what it did in 2013 with the Tomb Raider reboot and the episodic Hitman game.

Earlier this week, the developer tweeted out a photo of Raziel from The Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver with the caption, "I am Raziel, first-born of His lieutenants. I stood with Kain and my brethren at the dawn of the empire." Many have taken this to be a hint that Crystal Dynamics is working on another Legacy of Kain game, a claim that isn't entirely baseless, as this isn't the first teaser tweet the developer has posted.

Speculation first began on October 12, when the Crystal Dynamics Twitter account shared a relatively innocent message about the history of the Legacy of Kain series. "Published in 1996 by Crystal Dynamics, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain was the first of a legendary series introducing fans to Nosgoth," wrote the developer. Just a day later, another tweet was sent out, this time featuring artwork from Joanna Wolska. "'Raziel. You are worthy.' Joanna Wolska's #Inktober entry features our favorite wraith Raziel," the post's caption stated.

Though it's evident that Crystal Dynamics isn't making any concrete statements, it certainly seems something is going on behind the scenes. Whether that something is actually another Legacy of Kain entry remains to be seen, though it wouldn't be an overstatement to say fans would be disappointed if nothing comes of these tweets.

But sadly, there are a few signs that indicate Crystal Dynamics likely isn't hard at work on a new Legacy of Kain entry. For one, the studio (and Square Enix) is already confirmed to be in a partnership with Marvel Entertainment to create a series of video games based on the company's properties, the first of which is an Avengers game set for development with Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal. Additionally, a Shadow of the Tomb Raider leak seems to indicate that the Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix project is a genuine game. That evidence considered, and it doesn't seem like the studio would have much time to create a brand-new Legacy of Kain title.

However, the dream could become a reality if the potential new installment is a remaster or a remake of the original Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. Rather than having an in-house team toil away with new designs, characters, and stories, publisher Square Enix could outsource the efforts while Crystal Dynamic has its hands on the untitled Avengers project and presumably Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

The last installment in The Legacy of Kain series, Legacy of Kain: Defiance, was originally released for PC, PlayStation 2, and the now-discontinued Xbox console.
