Since 2014, the Infamous series has been dormant, with the popular superhero games being left in the past as developer Sucker Punch took on something new. The result of the studio’s hard work was Ghost of Tsushima, and with the game being praised by fans and critics alike, it is safe to say that a sequel would be welcome. However, before Sucker Punch makes a Ghost of Tsushima sequel, it should return to its interesting world of Conduits and superpowers.

Much like Naughty Dog came back to Uncharted after its work on The Last of Us, Sucker Punch should consider doing the same with the Infamous franchise. Cole MacGrath, and to a lesser extent Delsin Rowe, deserve a sendoff similar to the one Nathan Drake received in Uncharted. Further, there is plenty of gameplay potential that could come from a sequel as well, all of which would be enhanced by the power of a next-gen console. As such, a final chapter in the Infamous franchise would be a worthwhile endeavor.

The Power Of The PlayStation 5

From a gameplay perspective, most would agree that Infamous Second Son delivered in a big way. Being able to use unique powers like Smoke and Neon proved to be a lot of fun, and Infamous First Light only made the latter ability more memorable. The first two games nailed the power of electricity as well, with the plentiful upgrades for Cole’s abilities making him feel great to control. Seeing all these powers brought to life on the PlayStation 5 would be incredible, as the visuals alone could likely justify a playthrough. Character models would surely look better as well, adding to the weight of the story, while the game's setting could be even more vibrant and full of life.

Further, adding new powers to the mix could make a sequel even better. Sucker Punch could build off the evil ending for Infamous Second Son, allowing players to embody a version of Delsin that has leeched every power under the sun. This would add incredible depth to the gameplay, as even more powers could be added to mess around with. If Cole MacGrath was also made playable, gamers could wield the hero’s lightning powers once again, with Sucker Punch having few technical limitations as to what they do with them.

While adding depth to combat through some new powers would be great to see, the biggest advantage of the PS5 could make a superhero even more fun to control. Sucker Punch could put emphasis on the DualSense controller and its standout features, using haptic feedback and adaptive triggers to make every power feel different. Players could feel Delsin’s chain or Cole’s Amp colliding with enemies. Cole charging up electricity could have a distinct vibration from Delsin fading into a puff of smoke. Gamers could notice their trigger fighting them when charging up a big blast of energy. All these smart touches would improve the hero experience further, and none of them could have been possible in the previous Infamous games.

Providing Proper Closure

However, the more important thing that an Infamous 3 can do is put the series to rest. If a sequel came, gamers would not need to wonder happened to Cole after the lightning bolt struck at the end of Infamous 2. Further, players could learn what would happen if Cole and Delsin met up, as well as who would win if the two Conduits battled against one another in a fight to the death. An expanded version of Infamous’ karma system could see players using one hero in a good playthrough and the other in an evil run, adding a massive amount of replayability.

Infamous remains one of the best superhero franchises in all of gaming, and it deserves to go out on a high note rather than a whimper. Through the release of one more game, Sucker Punch can give fans a definitive ending to the story. Players could enjoy more powers than ever before, with the abilities looking better and feeling amazing thanks to the DualSense controller. While Ghost of Tsushima and other games like it may be the future for Sucker Punch, looking to the past one last time would be a welcome surprise.

A new Infamous game is not known to be in development.
