When it comes to overall VR experiences, no one does it quite like HTC and its VIVE line. From the hardware to software to many different accessories, HTC VIVE is truly innovative in the realm of VR. The first HTC VIVE originally debuted in 2015 and has been changing the VR game ever since. There have been a few new iterations of headset as well as upgraded controllers and even trackers that attach to key points on the user’s body. HTC VIVE is also hosting its first-ever VIVECON from May 11 to 12 and debuting some incredible new items.

One of its biggest announcements is the HTC VIVE Focus 3, a brand new all-in-one VR headset specifically designed with businesses in mind. This new headset borrowed from the HTC VIVE Pro in a lot of ways, especially in regards to its incredible graphics and overall design. That being said, the HTC VIVE Focus 3 is unlike anything that VR has seen before and will especially help businesses that rely on VR technology for training. In an interview with Game Rant, the GM of HTC VIVE, Dan O’Brien, discussed the new headset and complete kit in detail.

The HTC VIVE Focus 3 Tech

Technologically speaking, the HTC VIVE Focus 3 is miles ahead. Users will be able to see in 5K resolution, or 2.5K per eye during use. It’s also got a refresh rate of 90 Hz and a real RGB panel, helping avoid things like motion blur that can break the immersion of a VR experience. The range of vision is a much more natural 120 degrees, allowing its simulation users to see things like the patient and the surrounding medical instruments at the same time.

Construction-wise, the HTC VIVE Focus 3 is lightweight with a magnesium alloy chassis that’s 20% lighter and 500% stronger than other traditional plastics. It’s also built with a 45-degree arm that alleviates pressure and helps allocate the weight distribution evenly. It’s got removable and swappable batteries that last up to 2 hours. They’re also easily chargeable and a LED light in the back of the headset shows when the battery might need to be replaced or charged.

In line with O’Brien’s assertion about how this caters to business VR users, the HTC VIVE Focus 3 also has a quick-release button. This quick release makes it easier for someone to remove the headset and allows another person to take over quickly. It’s understandable for people to be leery of sharing VR headsets, but the HTC VIVE Focus 3 has a magnetic gasket and padding that makes swapping parts or cleaning them incredibly easy.

Most VR headsets require users to take off the piece to adjust the eye sight, then put it back on to see if it’s correct. The HTC VIVE Focus 3 actually lets its users adjust their IPD (inter-pupillary distance) while wearing the headset, and it doesn’t have premeasured settings. Instead, it can be a completely custom experience with IPD adjustments ranging from 57 mm to 72 mm. The gasket will even accommodate glasses up to 150 mm wide.

Audio is a crucial part of the VR experience, but it can also get in the way of users keeping track of the space they’re occupying in real life. To combat this, the HTC VIVE Focus 3 has immersive audio that has an open back, meaning users can still hear what’s happening in VR as well as their surroundings. This is important when the user isn’t in a familiar space, or may be in a work environment and needs to hear everything around them in addition to the headset. This section is also contact-free, so those who need to share headsets have one less point of contact and area to clean. The HTC VIVE Focus 3 also has dual microphones for echo and noise cancellation.

The HTC VIVE Focus 3 comes with new controllers that have 6 degrees of function and 15-hour battery life. The headset has 8 GB of RAM and runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2. There’s also a copper heat pipe designed with a heatsink to move heat away from the chipset, meaning users can use the HTC VIVE Focus 3 headset without it getting too hot. The headset is also kept cool thanks to centrifugal fans and wide airflow vents.

How HTC VIVE Focus 3 Will Help Businesses

According to O’Brien, the HTC VIVE Focus 3 was crafted with businesses in mind to target the specific pain points they may face when using VR technology. For a long time, VR tech has been tailored to the gaming experience, which is wonderful, but not conducive for companies that rely on VR to help train their employees. Healthcare and flight training are among some businesses that rely on VR technology to train their incoming people. O’Brien also said special care was taken in creating the interface for the HTC VIVE Focus 3, as it’s probable that many people who use the headset may be unfamiliar with VR.

The VIVE Reality System was made with easy-to-find apps and lots of self-help functionality so even those who don’t have a lot of experience with VR can navigate it with ease. The VIVE XR Suite is a boon for businesses as well, having things like a dedicated app store separate from the one with games, and a virtual classroom that allows those with the headset to either lead or take a class totally in VR. The headset was created as a solution for businesses that need VR equipment that meets required compliance and security measures.

While the HTC VIVE Focus 3 was designed with businesses in mind, it’s definitely not just meant for business use. Consumers and gamers can benefit from the HTC VIVE Focus 3 thanks to its many graphical updates, but it also tethers to PCs and supports wifi streaming. Overall, the HTC VIVE Focus 3 seems to be a promising advancement in the VR space and will be a good choice for both businesses and gamers alike. It won’t be available until June, but there’s a lot to look forward to with the HTC VIVE Focus 3.

HTC VIVE Focus 3 will release on June 27.
