Yesterday, news broke that Pokemon GO developer Niantic was developing Harry Potter: Wizard's Unite, an augmented reality game set to release in 2018. While that news is plenty exciting, Harry Potter fans have even more to be excited about, as Warner Bros. Interactive has formed a new studio dedicated to developing mobile and console games set in J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World.

Portkey Games, named after magical objects that let wizards teleport to different locations, will work exclusively on new Harry Potter games. Since there are already a number of video games based on the books and films, fans can expect Portkey Games to explore original stories and ideas outside of Harry Potter's years at Hogwarts.

However, that doesn't mean familiar characters can't show up in the video games. In fact, Portkey Games has teased that there will be games featuring some fan favorite Harry Potter characters at different points in their lives than seen in the books. The possibilities are endless, but perhaps fans will have a chance to see more of what Harry himself has been up to since the conclusion of The Deathly Hallows.

Portkey Games has also teased that players will be able to explore new locations and experience new story elements, which should all be very exciting for fans of the franchise. After these exciting developments, fans may be hungry for more details, and while we have none to share at this time, Portkey Games has teased that more should come "really soon."

It's possible Portkey Games will pull the curtain back on its first Harry Potter video game project as soon as next month, as there are a couple of different gaming events that would provide great opportunity to do so. After all, both The Game Awards and the PlayStation Experience take place in December, and both have an established history of revealing new video game projects to the masses.

Regardless of when we see the new Harry Potter games, it's nice to know that they are in development at all. The Harry Potter franchise has always been brimming with potential when it comes to video gaming, and it will be interesting to see what kind of projects Portkey Games dreams up for fans.

New Harry Potter games are in development for mobile and console platforms.
