It's E3 time, and that means rumors are popping up everywhere. Microsoft's E3 2018 press conference is set to take place later today, and surprisingly, not much has leaked ahead of time, at least compared to the other conferences. However, one rumor making the rounds on the internet today has potentially spoiled a bombshell Microsoft has planned for its press conference in the form of a new Halo game developed by franchise creator Bungie.

This supposed leak comes from Twitter user ibrener, who is the Xbox editor for a site called UniversoXperience. ibrener failed to provide any evidence for his claims, but did say that Microsoft has invested money in a new Halo project at Bungie. At this point, it's impossible to determine if this is true, but we will just have to wait until 1:00pm Pacific time today to find out one way or another.

If Bungie is developing a Halo video game for Microsoft, it would come as a big surprise. After all, Bungie is currently in the midst of a 10-year publishing contract with Activision, and is busy working on expansions for Destiny 2. Bungie has also made clear its intentions to self-publish its new games, which makes a potential deal with Microsoft seem even less likely.

However, if Bungie is in fact developing a new Halo game for Microsoft, what exactly would that project be? One possibility that comes to mind is that Bungie's supposed Halo project is Halo Infinity, a game that is rumored to be announced at Microsoft's press conference. Since 343 is likely busy working on updates for Halo: The Master Chief Collection and developing Halo 6, it would make sense for Microsoft to seek out another studio to work on the rumored Halo Infinity in the meantime.

Ultimately, fans should keep their expectations in check and not get their hopes up that Bungie has actually returned to work on a new Halo game. This is an unsubstantiated rumor and should be taken with a massive grain of salt. On the bright side, at least fans won't be kept in suspense for long, as Microsoft's E3 2018 press conference will kick off later today at 1:00pm Pacific.

A new Halo game is rumored to be in development for Xbox One.
