Gran Turismo series creator Kazunori Yamauchi confirms that the development team at Polyphony Digital has started work on the next Gran Turismo game. The last game in the popular racing series was Gran Turismo Sport, a game which split critics and Gran Turismo fans for several reasons.

Speaking to GT Planet, Yamauchi said that "obviously we’re working on the next Gran Turismo already." The developer didn't call the new game Gran Turismo 7 or Gran Turismo Sport 2, but Yamauchi does speak highly of what the development team achieved with the last game in the series. "The world of sport we’ve achieved through GT Sport is something I’ve always imagined to be the future of Gran Turismo," said Yamauchi, and that with races and vehicle physics, Gran Turismo Sport "reached the best place that we’ve ever reached."

Yamauchi also said that the next Gran Turismo game would be "a complete form of Gran Turismo." The developer said that "the next title that we’re going to create will be a combination of the past, present and future." So, it could potentially offer the same level of racing physics seen in Gran Turismo Sport but with the same amount of single-player content as a main Gran Turismo title.

Fans will also hope that the next Gran Turismo game leaves some parts of Gran Turismo Sport behind. Players weren't too happy when the game's online connectivity caused them problems, and many also voiced their unhappiness when Gran Turismo Sport added microtransactions a year after it was first released. It's unclear whether the team at Polyphony Digital has heard those criticisms and if it will be addressing them with the next game in the series, but many will be hoping so.

Many will also want to know if the next Gran Turismo game is going to be released on PS5. With the PS5 release date likely in holiday 2020, it would seem strange for Polyphony Digital to be working on a PS4 exclusive that hasn't been announced yet. The game could be a cross-generation release, but it probably won't completely skip PS5.

Sony has been teasing the incredible specs of the PS5 and the Gran Turismo series, which is known for how it pushes PlayStation hardware, could be a good way to show that. However, it's not yet known if the game will be a launch title or if fans will have to wait some time after the PS5's launch to play it.

A new Gran Turismo is in development for unspecified platforms.
