It's been almost two years since Fire Emblem: Three Houses released on the Nintendo Switch to general acclaim, and since then it's managed to bring plenty of Fire Emblem newbies into the fold with its cast of loveable characters and modernized and intuitive approach to the series' classic mechanics. Many of those new fans have even decided to check out the other games in the series, like Nintendo's limited run of the very first game in the series, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light.

But for those hungering for some new Fire Emblem games to wade through, reliable leaker Zippo might have some good news. According to a recent info dump covering everything that Nintendo may have coming over the course of 2021, Intelligent Systems has reportedly "been working on an FE title that they're developing separately from Three Houses on their own." On top of that, the game is "very close to nearing completion," meaning that an announcement at E3 and a release this year could be on the cards.

Zippo doesn't have many more details than that, but he theorizes that the game could be a remake of the Japan-only Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, a Super Famicom game that's been on many people's lists of JRPGs in need of a remake for quite some time. As one of the few Fire Emblem games never released in the west, Genealogy of the Holy War could offer an adventure that many Fire Emblem fans, whether a long-time enthusiast or a recent convert, have never experienced. Beyond that, as Zippo notes, it could give the developers a bit of breathing space before the next new game in the series, likely to be a follow-up to Three Houses.

Of course, Genealogy of the Holy War isn't the only game though could be being remade. There are plenty of Fire Emblem games worthy of the remake treatment, including The Binding Blade, featuring protagonist Roy who many will recognize from Super Smash Bros., and The Blazing Blade, the title that arguably brought Fire Emblem to the attention of a western audience in the first place. With a series spanning 30 years and 16 games, there's a lot to be getting on with if the publishers want to update and re-release them.

One potential downside is, naturally, the inevitable deluge of new sword-wielding fighters in the Super Smash Bros. games. Since Marth and Roy's addition to the roster of Super Smash Bros. Melee, the number of Fire Emblem characters has ballooned to eight across various games, with some fans even getting so fed up with the glut of interchangeable swordspeople that they've designed entire mods to rid the game of Fire Emblem content. If games like Genealogy of the Holy War or Blazing Blade start grabbing the attention of a new generation of gamers, they could start seeing the likes of Eliwood, Sigurd or Leif pop up as playable brawlers. Still, that seems like a small price to pay to see a generation of games come successfully to the west: fans will have to wait and see if Nintendo confirms Zippo's claims.
