The sci-fi drama series Doctor Who has existed in various forms since the 1960s as a staple of British television. London-based game studio Maze Theory worked with BBC Studios on a VR game called Doctor Who: The Edge of Time that released in 2019, and now the studio will be developing two new games for the property.

On May 11, Maze Theory announced that it received funding from the UK Creative Content EIS Fund to expand its "multi-tech, gaming experiences" with games in its Doctor Who and Peaky Blinders series, as well as new IP. The first new Doctor Who game will release on all major consoles and PC "early next year," and will be followed by a horror mobile game in collaboration with Malaysian studio Kaigan Games.

These three Doctor Who titles will apparently create a "trilogy of experiences" according to Maze Theory's announcement. Studio CEO Ian Hambleton said that, "Maze Theory is evolving to the next level," and will be creating experiences that fans "crave."

While part of this push into new platforms is meant to "significantly grow its user base," VR has become more popular in part thanks to recognizable titles like Doctor Who and Marvel Comics' Iron Man.

A Doctor Who game is in development for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
