Devil May Cry 5 has been rumored to be in development for years, but so far nothing has been announced. Rumors of the game's existence have heated up in the past month, but both The Game Awards and PlayStation Experience passed without any announcements by Capcom. Now a new Devil May Cry game has finally been announced, but it's not what fans have been expecting.

Chinese company Yunchang Game has licensed the rights to the Devil May Cry IP to create a mobile phone game called Devil May Cry: Pinnacle of Combat. Details on the project remain scarce at this point, but it's unlikely that Devil May Cry: Pinnacle of Combat will be canon with the Capcom-developed games in the series, as it's not planned for release outside of China.

The game appears to feature both Dante and Virgil as playable characters, and is set in various locales that look ripped from past Devil May Cry games. As far as game modes go, Devil May Cry: Pinnacle of Combat will reportedly feature online team battles and real-time PvP combat, which means that the entire game may be built around multiplayer.

Many fans may respond negatively to this news, but the reveal of Devil May Cry: Pinnacle of Combat is nothing to be upset about. After all, the game is being handled by Yunchang Game, meaning Capcom isn't using any of its own resources to develop the project. Furthermore, the game's exclusivity to China also means that it is highly unlikely to be of any importance to the Devil May Cry canon, so fans of the console versions shouldn't have to play it to follow the franchise's ongoing story.

Essentially, Devil May Cry: Pinnacle of Combat is a nonissue, and doesn't indicate one way or another if Devil May Cry 5 is in development or not. Capcom still hasn't made any announcements about the long-rumored game, but with so many rumors surrounding the project and the Devil May Cry HD Collection coming to current-gen consoles next year, its eventual announcement seems inevitable at this point.

In the meantime, gamers in China can look forward to playing Devil May Cry: Pinnacle of Combat on their smartphones next year.

Devil May Cry: Pinnacle of Combat will launch for Android and iOS mobile devices in 2018, exclusively in China.
