In just a few months, we’ll finally find out if Dead Space 3‘s coop mode was a worthwhile addition to the franchise. While gamers continue to debate the merits of co-op and the balance of action vs horror, we can say one thing for sure: the latest Dead Space 3 screenshots aren’t helping with the wait.

If one thing should be taken away from the in-game imagery, it’s that Dead Space 3 looks absolutely gorgeous.  The game, which was originally rumored to use DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine, features amazing character models, with Isaac’s new suit looking just as sleek as ever.

As was previously revealed, Zero G sections will once again be making their return, though with more of the freedom present in Dead Space 2 than the original game. We also get a look at protagonist Isaac Clarke fending off a Feeder necromorph. The Feeder is a new enemy type, which is created when a human ingests necromorph infected food. Though it might sound gross, Dead Space has never been a game for the faint of heart.

There’s been quite a bit of controversy surrounding Dead Space 3. The game’s newly added cooperative mode has turned a few heads – though not in the way EA was expecting. Thankfully, developer Visceral Games has been adamant in showing the franchise hasn’t lost its horror roots.  There is still worry in the back of this Dead Space fan’s mind, though the fact that coop is entirely optional – and that the game will change to reflect the amount of players – helps to ease some of the skepticism.

Then again, seeing as Dead Space 3 is trying to prove it’s still a horror game, it probably wasn’t a good idea for EA to name one of the above screenshots “DS3_Thrilling.”

Dead Space 3 releases February 5th, 2013 for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
