Mangaka Kae Hashimoto revealed that they will be working on a new spin-off series in the Cells at Work! franchise. The announcement was made on their Twitter account on January 16.

Hashimoto is currently writing the Interviews with Monster Girls spin-off, Occult-chan wa Katarenai, which began serialization in Young Magazine the 3rd in 2019 before moving to Monthly Young Magazine in 2021.

Cells at Work! Code Black anime

The new series, Cells at Work! Illegal, will launch on the YanMaga website starting February 1. New chapters will be released on the first and third Tuesday of every month from then on. Akane Shimizu’s Cells at Work! manga serialized in Kodansha’s Monthly Shōnen Sirius magazine from 2015-2021, amassing 6 tankōbon volumes during its run. The original series’ popularity has inspired a variety of manga spin-offs over the years, with Illegal standing as the 9th so far.

David Production animated a 13-episode anime adaptation during the Summer 2018 season. The series was followed by an 8-episode second season, Cells at Work!!, which aired during the Winter 2021 season. Kenichi Suzuki (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders - Battle in Egypt) directed the first season, while Hirofumi Ogura (Gintama, Yakitate!! Japan) took over for the second season. Yūko Kakihara (Kids on the Slope, Chihayafuru) worked the series script and composition alongside Suzuki, with Kenichiro Suehiro (Re:ZERO, Golden Kamuy) and MAYUKO handling the music.

A 13-episode anime adaptation of the Cells at Work! Code Black spin-off manga animated by Liden Films aired during the Winter 2021 season. Hideyo Yamamoto (Strike the Blood, The Prince of Tennis II) directed the series, with Hayashi Mori (Drifting Home) working on series composition, and Yugo Kanno (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Psycho-Pass) composing the music. The spin-off manga ran in Kodansha’s Morning magazine from 2018-2021 and amassed 8 tankōbon volumes throughout its run.

Aniplex of America licenses both anime series in English. Kodansha USA publishes the Cells at Work! manga alongside the Cells at Work: Bacteria!, Cells at Work!: Neo Bacteria!, Cells at Work! White Brigade, Cells at Work! Baby, Cells NOT at Work!, Cells at Work! Code Black, Cells at Work and Friends!, and Cells at Work: Platelets! spin-off series in English.
