It’s been nearly 24 hours since the release of the teaser trailer for BioWare’s next game — which will receive a full reveal during the Spike VGAs early next month — but gamers have already begun to speculate as to what this new title from BioWare might be. While the teaser trailer touts a new direction, a new game, and a new studio from BioWare, some clever gamers seem to believe the developer is taking over an already established property.

The first property that many seem to think this new BioWare title will end up being is the forthcoming next entry in the Command and Conquer series. It would make sense, based on the military nature of the footage and screenshot, that this could be a Command and Conquer title, and even a posting by a Victory Games employee suggests they are now working for BioWare. BioWare and Command and Conquer’s close ties to EA could have made for a perfect fit, with EA deciding to roll Victory Games into the higher profile development studio.

The other possibility for this unknown title is that BioWare is working on a follow-up to the Mercenaries franchise, which has been tentatively titled Mercs Inc. It’s a similar situation with EA holding the publishing rights to Mercenaries, and BioWare rolling in a developer who was previously working on the project, but this rumor also seems a little more believable.

Based on the trailer and the screenshot, it appears that this game will have a more cartoony style despite its militarized nature. If that holds true throughout the entire game, we could be looking at the makings of BioWare’s interpretation of the Mercenaries franchise.

Both are pretty enterprising possibilities for BioWare’s next project, but both would contradict the popular opinion, which suggests this forthcoming title to be a new IP. Sure, getting to see BioWare’s sensibilities applied to a series like Command and Conquer or Mercenaries sounds intriguing, but it doesn’t necessarily seem like the perfect fit. We’ll just have to wait for the official reveal on December 10th.

Would you rather see BioWare head up development duties on either Mercenaries or Command and Conquer? Do you think -- based on the screenshot and trailer -- that BioWare has taken the reigns on another established property?
