BioShock is one of the biggest franchises from 2K Games and Take-Two Interactive. The last game in the series, BioShock Infinite, sold over 11 million units on its own, and so an eventual sequel is just a matter of time. We know very little about what a future BioShock game will entail, but there's now a distinct possibility that it will revisit the multiplayer mode seen in BioShock 2.

As some may recall, BioShock 2 added multiplayer to the primarily single player experience, with mixed results. Some people seemed to really enjoy BioShock 2's multiplayer component, whereas others felt that it was shoehorned in. Regardless of one's feelings for BioShock 2's multiplayer, though, the fact that all future Take-Two Interactive games will have microtransactions means that once a new BioShock does materialize, it will also have them, and that means multiplayer is likely making a comeback.

It's possible that a new BioShock single player experience will feature microtransactions instead of its possible multiplayer mode, but that's difficult to imagine. Adding microtransactions to BioShock, a franchise that places an emphasis on creating a special atmosphere, could ruin the immersion for players and in turn ruin the story. It would be safer for 2K Games to instead put microtransactions in multiplayer, where it would likely avoid as much fan backlash.

Of course, we are just speculating about how microtransactions will be added to a game that has yet to be officially announced. It's way too early at this point to say how microtransactions will be featured in a new BioShock game, but unless Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick changes his tune, we know for certain that they will be in the game in some capacity.

Some BioShock fans may be completely turned off by the idea of microtransactions coming to the next game in the series, and may be looking for alternatives to play instead. We Happy Few, a game inspired by BioShock, won't use microtransactions - or at least, microtransactions haven't been announced for it yet. There's also the open world FPS BioShock creator Ken Levine is working on that may serve as a suitable substitute for the next BioShock.

We really have no idea when the next BioShock game will be announced, but chances are good it will be within the next few years. We know that the franchise is important to Take-Two, and since it has been a consistent top-seller, it wouldn't make sense for the company to abandon the IP. Whether or not microtransactions will ruin the experience remains to be seen, but it will be interesting to see how they are implemented and if they result in the resurrection of BioShock 2's divisive multiplayer mode.

A new BioShock game has yet to be officially announced.
