Scream 5 is officially coming to movie theaters in just a few months and Neve Campbell is coming right along with it. There was a time when neither the movie officially titled Scream nor the actress was a sure thing to come back, but Campbell recently explained why she decided to make a return.

While Campbell has been a part of every Scream movie in the franchise, she felt as though it was time for the series to end when Wes Craven passed away in 2015. It's also been a decade since Scream 4 was released, but now that they're going back to the source material, the actress decided to come back one more time as well.

During an interview with Total Film, Campbell was very apprehensive about Scream 5 without Craven. However, getting to meet the people behind the new film helped change her mind. Ready or Not filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett were attached to the new Scream and after they and Campbell sat down and talked, she said she got very excited for what they had planned for the fifth film in the long-running series.

Campbell did make it clear that before the meeting, she was apprehensive about someone besides Craven making a Scream movie. However, she got a letter from Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett that she said was quite moving. Then she watched Ready or Not and realized that they were the right people to pick up the franchise after a decade off. In particular, she thought that the tone the two set with Ready or Not absolutely matched up with Scream.

Campbell also said that she was pleased by the fact that the filmmakers seemed to be "geeking out" on the set during production. She claimed that at one point, the pair told her they forgot they were supposed to be directing and running the show and instead got caught up in watching a Scream movie through the monitors.

Just what they were watching Campbell do is still largely under wraps, as is usually the case when it comes to the Scream movies. Obviously, several people are going to get sliced and diced, but what the killer wants and who will be the next round of victims is still very much up in the air. That could include who else will make an appearance, considering there are some who believe that a beloved character from the original could make an appearance in Scream 5.

Scream 5 hits theaters on January 14th, 2022.
