Netflix users will have already known that Jim Henson's 1982 film The Dark Crystal was getting a modern prequel on the video streaming service, and now gamers will be able to join in on the action too: The Dark Crystal is getting its own tie-in videogame. Entitled The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics, the newly-announced Nintendo Switch title will launch later this year. It was revealed during the E3 2019 Nintendo Direct, where it opened with a Jim Henson-inspired live action sequence.

As the trailer shows, the tactical title will be a turn-based experience not unlike Final Fantasy Tactics, where positioning soldiers in a strategic manner will be a key factor in winning battles. Set in the land of Thra, the game will feature appearances from show-based characters as players progress through the game. The brief trailer revealed that combat will involve at least some level of environmental interaction, as pillars are capable of being toppled on to enemies from above.

The game is developed by BonusXP, which is the same studio that worked with Netflix to produce a Stranger Things tie-in game. The Dark Crystal tie-in game will take players through the events of the Netflix show, and will enter brand-new uncharted territory as well. Nintendo has confirmed that The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics will feature never-before-seen playable characters, too.

Beyond that, little else is known about the newly-announced Switch title. With the Netflix show expected to launch on August 30, however, gamers can hope that the tie-in won't be too far behind the launch of the show itself.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics will release later on this year for the Nintendo Switch.
