Ever since the premiere of the first season of Netflix’s The Witcher just a month ago, the show garnered millions of viewers and has easily spread the popularity of the franchise from the video game series to the world of streaming. With the second season set to begin production this year, the casting of Vesemir in The Witcher, Geralt’s mentor and witcher friend, is going to have a lot of eyes on it.

Besides the character being hinted at in the season finale, fans have become quite interested in how the show will portray the character especially since Mark Hamill began playing with the idea of taking up the role. When a fan asked him on Twitter if he would do just that, Hamill responded, twice, that he is indeed interested in playing the role. Lauren Hissrich, creator of The Witcher Netflix show, also entertained the idea in a recent interview. With supposedly both of the key figures needed on board, Hamill could actually be a serious candidate for the role.

Vesemir is one of the first characters to appear alongside Geralt in the first entries in The Witcher novel series written by author Andrzej Sapkowski. The first two entries in the series are story collections titled The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny. The novel that takes place after those two collections, Blood of Elves, is technically the first novel that starts off what is known as The Witcher Saga. Vesemir shows up numerous times throughout the early novels and is a key character in them.

Throughout the stories, Vesemir is portrayed is a fatherly figure. He is a mentor to Geralt and is typically there by his side when he is out on adventures with him. In Blood of Elves, Vesemir is found at the old witcher’s keep Kaer Morhen which is responsible for training and raising new Witchers at a young age.

After the invasion and subsequent occupation of Cintra by the Nilfgaardian empire and its army, Ciri was evacuated and eventually met up with the man linked to her destiny - Geralt of Rivia. Geralt takes Ciri back to Kaer Morhen where he figures she will be safe from the geopolitics that plagued her kingdom. When she finally does manage to settle back into Kaer Morhen after a number of near deaths and kidnappings, she begins her training with Geralt, Vesemir, and the other Witchers to become one herself. Besides Geralt, Vesemir plays a significant role in mentoring Ciri during her training, which is even shown in The Witcher 3.

As mentioned before, Vesemir is a mentor to Geralt, forever lecturing him like a teacher does. But Vesemir is also one of the most intense fighters around which basically equates him to Luke Skywalker to some degree. In the newest Star Wars movies, but especially in The Last Jedi, Luke, played by Hamill, is basically a wise bearded fatherly figure who trains Rey to connect with the force. Hamill’s appearance or voice from those scenes do not even need to be altered in order to see how he could pull off playing Vesemir. He is basically Vesemir in space.

Hamill is already familiar with how to act with swords (or lightsabers), so picking up Vesemir’s Witcher weapons should not be a stretch for him at all. Hamill’s incredible range as an actor is also a great reason why he could excel playing the old witcher. From Ultimate Spider-Man to Scooby Doo and The Powerpuff Girls, Hamill has credits in virtually every major animated show from the past three decades, not to mention his second-most recognizable role as the Joker in several Batman animated series. Basically, he is not only a widely known actor from a popular movie franchise but also a prolific and legendary voice actor.

If Mark Hamill is ultimately cast as Vesemir, then fans are in for potentially another great performance from the actor whose filmography stretches for decades.
