Netflix has never been a company to shy away from putting out as much content as possible, but even for them, their latest target seems fairly ridiculous. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos has teased that his company wants to set their sights for 6 brand new animated films every year in the near future. While the service isn't exactly new to animation as a genre, creating six whole movies every year is an incredibly ambitious goal, even for a company with the resources Netflix has.

It was during a comment to Variety that Sarandos made his vision for the future clear: “Our animation ambition right now is not just to step up and be as big as someone who’s doing it today — we’re on a path to be releasing six animated features a year, which no major studio has ever done, on top of the very healthy slate of animated series." While this a somewhat admirable goal, it is also, frankly, kind of absurd. Putting out that many animated films every year would likely require quite a few animation studios to be working for Netflix year-round producing nothing but Netflix originals, and even then you'd need at minimum 12 studios releasing one film every two years if you wanted a fully fledged feature of serious quality.

Sarandos didn't elaborate one the practical questions of how this would be achieved, but he did discuss how Netflix approaches these kinds of ambitious projects. "The way we think about those things is not to say, ‘Well, how do we do it like someone else has done it?’ Because no one’s ever really done most of these functions at the scale that we’re doing, and the only way you could do that is to have a really trusted team, who will make decisions and take them seriously and own them.”

Now that all sounds well and good in theory, but theory is a long way from practical realities, and the industry has yet to see exactly what Netflix has planned in this area. Presumably the company will begin to gradually ramp up its investment in animation before embarking on such a huge undertaking, but it's impossible to say for certain. And of course, not all animation is created equal. For every Soul, there's several Barbie Princess Adventures, which may not fare well with critics but hit it big with young viewers. At the very least, it can be certain that fans of animation should keep an eye on Netflix's output over the next few years.
