No fans of sci-fi action movies that focus on time travel and fighting aliens should miss out on watching the new Chris Pratt movie The Tomorrow War. Having premiered this summer, the film offers a captivating story as well as a lot of intense action scenes in which the heroes find themselves in grave danger.

While the story of the film is unique, the audience members who enjoy watching it and want to find similar movies, have a lot to choose from. Netflix, in particular, offers a lot of movies that deal with similar topics as The Tomorrow War - either time travel or fighting aliens, sometimes both. As a result, The Tomorrow War fans can easily hold a marathon of similar movies, should they decide to do so.

10 Back To The Future (1985)

Albeit much more peaceful than The Tomorrow War, the first film in the Back to the Future series also works with time travel. Young student Marty accidentally travels back in time and has to make sure his parents get together or he'll never be born. He also has to figure out how to get back to the future, hence the film's name.

Thanks to its comedic tone, memorable performances, and the danger Marty faces, the film has become classic. It also created the iconic duo Marty (Michael J. Fox) and Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) that went on to have two more time-traveling adventures in the sequels.

9 The Butterfly Effect (2004)

Traveling through time is tempting, both into the past and into the future. However, it can be extremely dangerous, especially when somebody changes the past. That's what Ashton Kutcher's hero Evan does in The Butterfly Effect.

Its way of time travel might initially seem confusing to the audience but once they get used to it, the film is captivating and makes sense. The Tomorrow War heroes mostly travel to the future, but just like in this film, their past is forever changed because of the action of someone who doesn't respect the law of time.

8 Doom (2005)

Space can be beautiful but in sci-fi action movies, it's also often dangerous. In The Tomorrow War, the threat comes to Earth, while in Doom, the heroes meet it on Mars.

What remains the same, however, is that the heroes might be in well over their heads and both films offer a large number of tension-filled action scenes. Doom is based on the popular game series, so it wouldn't be entirely remiss if The Tomorrow War got its own game adaptation one day.

7 Star Trek (2009)

Star Trek JJ Abrams

The first Star Trek rebooted movie once again uses the concept of time travel which isn't new in the franchise (it did so in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home or Star Trek VIII: First Contact). This time, the heroes' lives change forever because of an intervention from the future which is similar to what the heroes of The Tomorrow War experience.

When the revengeful Romulan Nero travels back in time, he accidentally changes the history and creates an alternate timeline, proving once again, that messing with the past is never a good idea.

6 Looper (2012)

Looper

Joseph Gordon-Levitt often takes on challenging roles in independent films but he's no stranger to sci-fi blockbusters either (Inception or Looper). In this film's case, the time-travel aspect is once again present, just like in The Tomorrow War.

Except for this time, the story is more personal, albeit still full of action scenes. The main hero travels back in time to kill someone, as this is his job, but this particular job is like no other - his task is to kill his younger self. Both Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis excel at this role and it also makes the audience think about whether it's a good choice to affect the past or not.

5 Ender's Game (2013)

Hailee Steinfeld smiles as Asa Butterfield in Ender's Game

Ender's Game is a classic in the world of sci-fi series. Even though the film only adapts the first book, it creates a coherent story about humanity's fight against aliens. Unlike in The Tomorrow War, the fighters are children but that doesn't mean they're helpless.

Asa Butterfield shines in the titular role and Hailee Steinfeld also draws attention to her performance in the movie. Ender's Game has the potential to surprise the audience, especially if they haven't read the books, because it's both clever and unexpected.

4 Edge Of Tomorrow (2014)

Time travel can be dangerous enough but time loops are often even worse. Especially if the hero only keeps dying over and over again. That's what happens in this manga-inspired movie. Tom Cruise plays a soldier who gets the chance to relive each day until he learns how to defeat the enemies of Earth, alongside Emily Blunt's more experienced soldier Rita.

Making the concept of a time loop interesting isn't easy because the story has to move forward despite the time loop repeating the same events (more or less). However, Edge of Tomorrow manages it since the audience wants to know if the heroes will succeed or not, and if yes, what price will they have to pay.

3 Terminator: Genisys (2015)

Fighting aliens is one thing but fighting robots - or, in this case, the terminators - can be just as dangerous, if not more.

The Terminator franchise has always worked with time travel as a significant plot point, which is an important similarity between the movie and The Tomorrow War. What's more, the stakes are similarly high since if the heroes lose, it will not only lead to their death but to the death of the entire humanity.

2 The 5th Wave (2016)

The 5th Wave

Many sci-fi movies are based on books, comics, or manga series but not that many of them draw their inspiration from young adult literature. The 5th Wave is an exception to this rule. Its young heroine, Cassie (Chloë Grace Moretz) is trying to find her younger brother in a world mostly destroyed by four waves of alien attacks. Cassie, however, is running out of time since the 5th wave might be very well approaching.

Facing hostile aliens can have many forms, as both this movie and The Tomorrow War demonstrated. It never goes without sacrifices, though, and The 5th Wave excels at building an intense atmosphere of a world where nothing is certain least of all a person's survival.

1 See You Yesterday (2019)

See You Yesterday

One of the newest sci-fi movies that deal with the topic of time travel like The Tomorrow War but offers a new spin on it is See You Yesterday. Two intelligent teenagers manage to travel back in time but they face many dangers because of society's intolerance.

Sci-fi films don't always deal with social topics in a clever way but See You Yesterday offers a story that will make the audience both think and fear for the film's heroes.
