Sitcoms are a highly popular genre. Unlike drama shows, they usually have a shorter runtime, around 20 to 30 minutes, which makes it easier to watch an episode in one sitting or binge-watch the whole series at once. They also allow the audience to laugh no matter where they come from because humor is in many ways universal.

As one of the biggest streaming services, Netflix has a lot of sitcoms available to choose from. Some use other genres as well, but regardless of their genre affinity, the best sitcoms on Netflix have the power to make the viewers laugh and they're worth watching no matter how old the audience is or where they come from.

10 Alexa And Katie

Alexa and Katie

A lot of sitcoms focus on adult characters, which is why it's always good to find one that gives space to younger heroes. Alexa and Katie tell the story of two best friends who go to school together. Alexa is ill but Katie supports her even though they argue sometimes.

The sitcom deals with topics that will be relatable to everyone who's ever gone to school, been in love, or had a best friend. As an ultimately feel-good story, it's ideal for both the teenage audience as well as older people.

9 The Good Place

William Harper Jackson in The Good Place Cropped

As one of the most original modern TV sitcoms, The Good Place works with a heroine that's far from heroic. Eleanor ends up in the Good Place (Heaven) after she dies. The only problem is she was a horrible person when she was still alive, so it's clear she shouldn't be where she is.

As Eleanor changes, so does the show and it offers more than just one surprise. But it always stays funny and imaginative in creating the world that exists after death. It also has a strong cast, other than Kristen Bell. Ted Danson shines as the angel Michael who runs the Good Place.

8 Grace And Frankie

Grace and Frankie

TV series most often give space to younger heroines. It's therefore refreshing to find one that doesn't. Grace and Frankie have been married to their husbands for decades but one day, they learn that their partners are in love with each other and want to leave them.

Grace and Frankie are by no means friends but they have to get along anyway. Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin give excellent performances, and watching them quipping with each other is a lot of fun. The series also boldly works with topics that other shows would be afraid to address.

7 Community

The show Community takes an environment well known to many people and transforms it into a ground full of jokes and sometimes absurd, sometimes painfully familiar situations. A lot of sitcom fans used to go to college, so a show about a group of people attending a community college will attract their attention.

Even more so because it's intelligent and has sympathetic characters who don't quite fit in with the rest of the world (and are played by brilliant actors). With six seasons on Netflix, those who start watching Community are in for a long and enjoyable experience.

6 The IT Crowd

Characters from The IT Crowd gathered for a season photoshoot.

Even though Netflix is an American streaming service, it also has a lot of foreign content. The IT Crowd is a British sitcom about two co-workers who work for the IT department of a large company and mostly go unnoticed by their eccentric boss.

This situation changes when their new boss Jen joins the department, even though she knows nothing about computers. Thanks to the short seasons, it's possible to stream The IT Crowd fast and its ironic and intelligent sense of humor makes it a memorable show.

5 The Kominsky Method

Kominsky Method

The view into the life of an actor is always fascinating because their everyday existence is different from most people's. The Kominsky Method is a bittersweet sitcom with a subtle sense of humor that, nevertheless, doesn't shy away from portraying serious topics, such as the loss of loved ones.

Alan Arkin and Michael Douglas give excellent performances in the leading roles and their quips are always fun to watch.

4 Glow

Glow

Some of the best shows combine both drama and comedy. In Glow, the humor wins but it also contains some action-filled moments where the viewers are nervous about what will happen next. That happens naturally in a show about a female wrestling team and the complicated relationships between its members.

Alison Brie shines in the leading role but all actresses give nuanced performances that are fun to watch. Plus, the show has the glamour and style of a retro piece, making it captivating both visually and storywise.

3 Never Have I Ever

Never Have I Ever

Going to high school is hard, even more so when somebody's dealing with not being popular. Never Have I Ever will be relatable to everyone who was once 15 years old and struggled with making sense of things, or maybe even with being angry.

That's what Devi, the main heroine of this show, feels (among other things). Based on Mindy Kaling's real-life experiences, the show is sometimes bittersweet but most of the time hilarious in a relatable and intelligent way.

2 Santa Clarita Diet

If anybody likes their humor dark and often bloody, then Santa Clarita Diet is the perfect recipe. Being a working mom is hard, even more so when Sheila transforms and now has an appetite for human flesh. Luckily, she still has her beloved family by her side, so there's no reason why she couldn't work it out.

The show doesn't shy away from violent scenes but at the core of it, it's a heartwarming, humorous tale about dealing with unexpected things with the help of loved ones. Plus, Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant as Sheila's husband Joel created an unforgettable comedic duo.

1 Seinfeld

seinfeld with his dentist

Some classics are famous for a good reason, and Seinfeld fits the bill. This legendary sitcom stands the test and is still fun to watch even today, more than 31 years after it first premiered.

It helps that it focuses on popular themes, such as relationships between friends and the effort to build a successful career. The cast is excellent and binge-watching all nine seasons on Netflix is an ideal way to pass the time.
