All shows on this list have been adapted from or into another form, crossing the barrier from television into video games, books, board games, and more! With rich backstories seeping with mythological lore and general medieval vibes, the following animation, live-action, and anime storylines are sure to pique some interest.

9 Arcane: League Of Legends

vi and jinx

Generally speaking, most MMORPG players, at some point in their life, will have played either Dota 2 or League of Legends, two of the biggest direct competitors in the MOBA industry. In the domain of adult animation, however, it is unnecessary to take sides, as viewers can enjoy the best of both worlds, guilt-free!

Arcane supplies a satisfactory dose of fan service without deriving from the thrilling storyline, which pits two superpowered sisters against each other. The social structure between Piltover and Zaun is deteriorating at a rapid rate, and Vi and Jinx become pawns in the game of life, death, and ultimate power.

8 Dragon's Dogma

Hannah and Ethan from Dragon's Dogma (Netflix)

Much like Dota, the Dragon's Dogma storyline is adapted from the popular open-world action combat video game of the same name. The story follows Ethan (aka The Arisen) who is grappling to preserve his humanity after his heart was stolen by a dragon, and he finds himself losing more of his identity with each supernatural battle he faces.

The Seven Deadly Sins play a vital role in this fantastical storytelling, with a plethora of mythical beasts to elevate the action-packed action scenes to the next level. Capcom took liberties with the original Dragon's Dogma tale and created their own version of events, which upset some die-hard fans, whereas others considered it a stroke of genius.

7 Merlin

merlin tv show merlin

Not many people need an introduction to Robin Hood's story, but Merlin takes a different approach to the classic tale by focusing on the wizard's struggles instead. This re-imagined legend follows the young Merlin and Prince Arthur from the beginning of his magical journey (which Merlin has kept secret from even his closest friends).

Back in the days of witch-hunting, practicing magic was banned even in Camelot, after the imprisonment of Kilgharrah, the last dragon, sparked the beginning of the Great Purge. Merlin discovers an uncanny connection to this mythical beast, who urges the young lad to protect and serve Arthur at all costs.

6 Blood Of Zeus

blood of zeus

An intriguing aspect of Dragon's Blood is the interactions between mortals and Gods, a trope that is heavily utilized in Blood of Zeus (aka Gods & Heroes). Set within the familiar Ancient Greek timeline, Heron, the illegitimate demigod son of Zeus, finds himself responsible for saving Olympus, and the rest of the world, from utter destruction.

With his herculean power and bravery, Heron must defeat the demonic forces threatening the world, however, he has very limited experience with his superhuman capabilities. Heron's character was created purely for the show and is unknown in classic Greek Mythology, but that doesn't make his story any less epic!

5 Trese

trese-feature

If the supernatural element of Dota's adaptation was more intriguing than the actual dragons, then Trese is the perfect watchlist addition! This supernatural detective works alongside the local law enforcement to extinguish any and all sinister forces from Manila. The mythological creatures (based on Filipino folklore) have formed an intricate criminal network, even enrolling trustworthy authority figures to do their bidding.

Alexandra Trese and her demonic, practically half-brothers, Crispin & Basilio, call upon their inner John Constantine as things take a horrific turn for the worst. It's the secrets of the past, however, that could potentially cause the most damage.

4 The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance

The Dark Crystal Age of Resistance

This J. M. Lee and Jim Henson classic may not be everyone's cup of tea, but once viewers get accustomed to the old-school puppeteering, the Dark Crystal storyline is sure to keep them glued to their screens! Netflix's Age of Resistance is based on the 1982 original Dark Crystal movie in conjunction with The Muppet Show creators with a distinctively unique style that was revolutionary for its time and has since been transformed into a video game too.

The otherworldly realm of Thra is overwhelmed by unashamed discrimination, as the elite Mystics look down their rather short noses at the nature-loving Gelflings, while the evil Skeksis corrupts everything in their reach. Rian, Deet, and Brea seek to restore balance to society by finding the mysterious dark crystal shard, fabled to prevent the Darkening from taking over Thra for good.

3 The Dragon Prince

The Dragon Prince Group

This underrated animated series has it all, from Titans, shadow elf assassins, dragons, and more, all trapped in a seemingly endless cycle of violence and destruction. The "muggle" Human Kingdoms were once the underdogs before the Unicorns blessed them with magical capabilities, which they used to kill the Dragon King and steal his egg, fueling The Mage Wars even further.

Two young human half-brother princes form an unlikely bond with their would-be killer, finding commonality in their desire to uncover the truth about their bloodstained history and return the baby Dragon Prince to its rightful throne. Tales of Xadia is a multiplayer co-op game inspired by Ezran, Rayla, and Callum's story that allows fans to immerse themselves within the mystical combat, and the Dragon Prince: Battlecharged board game gives a more hands-on approach.

2 The Witcher

the witcher geralt of rivia henry cavill

The legendary tale of Geralt of Rivia has captivated billions of people across the globe, making The Witcher one of Netflix's most-viewed shows of all time. Henry Cavill plays the infamous monster hunter imbued with superhuman qualities and an aversion to simple pleasantries (unless Yennefer is involved, that is!) Together with his trusty sidekick, the minstrel Jaskier, Geralt travels the realms to dominate the undefeatable, while protecting a not-so-sweet princess in the process.

An adult (17+) animated prequel, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, is also available on Netflix, which delves into the backstory of Vesemir, the oldest Witcher, and gaming enthusiasts have not been forgotten either! The series of books by Andrzej Sapkowski (on which all this is based) is also available to quench the Geralt thirst while waiting for Season 3 to drop.

1 Castlevania

A scene featuring characters from Castlevania

Arguably the closest match to Dragon Blood's style is the epic medieval Netflix animated game adaptation, Castelvania. Although the content deals more with vampires and demons than dragons and elves, the overall tone is rather grim and serious, with some lighthearted love stories thrown into the mix.

Three unlikely heroes join forces to put an end to the vampiric tyranny plaguing the land with their demonic army after Vlad Dracula Tepes swore to eradicate humanity from existence. Dracula's son, a notorious (drunk) Demon Hunter, and a book-smart sorceress are the world's last hope. However, teamwork appears to be a foreign concept, one which needs to be mastered with haste!
