Originally announced last year, Neon White made an explosive return to the front of player consciousness with a brand-new trailer at this year's Summer Game's Fest. The trailer shows off a little more gameplay as well as some cutscene animation and a very, very exciting release date for the game.

The premise of Neon White is that the player controls a damned soul attempting to earn redemption in a place of heaven. This goal is achieved by reaching heaven through violence, shooting, and slashing through enemies in quick succession. Like other games from Annapurna Interactive, it is hyper-stylized and distinct, unmistakable as anything else.

First and foremost is the biggest announcement of the new Neon White trailer: the release date. The game is coming out on June 16th, this very month, in just five days. This is certainly a surprise, but no doubt a welcome one for those wishing for more news about the game. The gameplay is a bizarre but not unwelcome mix of genres: fast-paced FPS gameplay mixed with cards. To be precise, the FPS part looks like an awesome Doom crossover, while the cards that players are using represent the attacks they are using, acting as guns and spells with limited ammunition. Players repeatedly zip between high platforms above an endless blue expanse and try not to die, all while looking very stylish. With the release date right around the corner, players should keep their ears open to see if this one should be snapped up or passed on.

The setting and style are quirky to the extreme, although whether that's a good thing will likely depend on how good the game's writing is. Annapurna's previous publishing range from the fantastic Outer Wilds to the more disappointing 12 Minutes, but almost all its games have fantastic atmospheres. Look no further than Sayonara Wild Hearts for one of the peak examples of this, and if Neon White can hook players similarly, it's halfway to the goal.

While the actual moment-to-moment gameplay looks well established and understandable, the gameplay loop itself is more of a mystery. Players will be going up against demons Neon White, that much is known, but the trailer also briefly shows a boss fight against another Neon. This is despite the player talking and likely flirting with a different Neon character. How much players will need to fight or woo their fellow Neons is not yet known, and may well be up to the player.
