Electronic Arts is doing absolutely nothing with the Dead Space IP. In fact, EA closed Visceral Games, the studio behind the Dead Space franchise, and its developers have since scattered to the wind, leaving little hope for Dead Space 4. Luckily, indie developer Sunscorched Studios has stepped up to fill the Dead Space void with its game Negative Atmosphere, which looks like an even more disturbing take on the sci-fi horror genre.

Negative Atmosphere wears its Dead Space influences on its sleeve. The game is set on a creepy space station, features third-person, over-the-shoulder gameplay, and even displays the players' ammunition on their weapon instead of using a HUD. The monster seen in the trailer has long, distinct limbs, not unlike the Necromorphs from Dead Space, but it is definitely a lot freakier than anything Isaac Clarke encountered in his blood-soaked adventures.

Another hallmark of Dead Space was show Isaac could be brutally murdered in a number of different, highly graphic ways. It seems that will be in Negative Atmosphere as well, as the trailer shows the protagonist get brutally stabbed through the head in a death animation that is presumably unique to that particular monster.

So far, the response to the Negative Atmosphere gameplay teaser has been largely positive. It seems many horror game fans are hungry to see another Dead Space-style game hit the market, even if it's not a proper Dead Space sequel. However, not everyone was impressed by the trailer, with a lot of criticism aimed at the voice acting and what some feel is excessive swearing.

The developers at Sunscorched Studios are aware of the reaction to the Negative Atmosphere voice acting and have promised to tone it down in the future. "We pushed him a little overboard here to test the waters for what people wanted," explained the studio's official Twitter account.

With no sign of Dead Space 4Negative Atmosphere looks like it may do a good job filling the gap. Whether or not it lives up to expectations remains to be seen, but what's on display in the gameplay teaser at least shows it will have terrifying monster designs if nothing else.

Negative Atmosphere is in development for unspecified platforms.
