Although certain genres have embraced the 'git gud' mentality in recent years, most video game developers have worked hard to make their games more accessible to players than ever before. Need For Speed Unbound is a great example of this, with plenty of accessibility options for players to tailor the experience to their own personal needs.

Perhaps the biggest of these options relates to the game's difficulty, with players able to choose between three very distinct options. Each one provides players with a noticeably different experience, leading many to wonder which Need For Speed Unbound difficulty setting is right for them. This guide will aim to answer that very question.

Every Difficulty Setting in Need For Speed Unbound

Relaxed (Easy)

The Relaxed difficulty setting is effectively the Easy mode in Need For Speed Unbound. With this setting, players' vehicles will be able to withstand more damage and both the cops and opposition racers will be far less aggressive. More importantly, perhaps, players will be given ten restarts per session, allowing them to retry races almost indefinitely until they finish in a position that they're satisfied with. This can be particularly useful during races with big buy-ins, as it ensures that players don't end up losing money due to one or two poor races.

Challenging (Medium)

The Challenging difficulty setting can be seen as the game's Normal or Medium difficulty mode and strikes a good balance between the other two options. Players still get four restarts, which should account for the occasional slip-up while still forcing them to pay attention to what they're doing in races. Their rivals will be a bit more competitive too, which should help to make each victory feel a little more well-earned.

Intense (Hard)

The Intense difficulty setting is exactly what it sounds like: a super challenging difficulty setting designed for veteran racers who are looking to put their skills to the test. They'll only get two restarts per session and will total their cars much faster than on either of the other two settings. The cops are incredibly aggressive too and their rivals will push them every step of the way during every race.

Does Lowering the Difficulty Setting Affect Rewards?

Some games punish players for playing on easy, either by lowering the in-game rewards that they receive for performing well or by locking them out of certain Trophies/Achievements. Thankfully, Need For Speed Unbound is not one of these games, meaning players are able to unlock every Trophy and Achievement on any difficulty setting. Race rewards will remain the same too, so all players need to worry about is finding the difficulty setting that is right for them. This is made all the easier by the fact that they'll be able to change the difficulty setting at any time by returning to the garage and then visiting the in-game menu.

Need for Speed Unbound is available on PS5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC.
