Not many racing titles have managed to gain acclamation as the Need for Speed series. With over two decades of history, the franchise remains one of the most popular among gamers even today. Though EA has been relatively quiet since its last main entry, new rumors continue to surface on an upcoming Need for Speed game.

It has been years since EA released a new title on its main lineup with Swedish studio Ghost Games launching Need for Speed: Heat in November 2019. Heat was met with mixed reviews and following its launch, Criterion Games took over Need for Speed the following year. Back in May, it was confirmed that the next Need for Speed title is on the way, with Criterion Games and Codemasters co-developing the game.

Now, one Reddit post claims that the upcoming title will not include any drag racing or drift events and that speedcross will make a comeback. The leak also mentions that the upgrade system will be simplified to offer something similar to what Forza Horizon does in its games. Further, the Reddit post mentions the title may include a moving train on the map along with menu-based car meets that let gamers bet on people during events. With regard to story elements, the next Need for Speed will reportedly lean heavily on female and cultural representation, but no details have been shared on what that would look like within the game.

This isn't the first time speculations about the next Need for Speed made it online. In fact, a previous post from the same user points to one of the game's more popular rumors, cartoon effects incorporated with realistic designs. Additionally, the character designs are reportedly inspired by the Need for Speed: No Limits mobile title. Either way, only time will if fans see any of these aspects come to life in the next entry.

EA is yet to make any official comments on the ongoing rumors. The Reddit post claims the new Need for Speed game will hit the market during the year, though that's highly unlikely given the lack of updates and that 2023 is only four months away. Even so, there's certainly no lack of excitement for the franchise as fans were recently seen hijacking an EA Dragon Age post with Need for Speed comments. Regardless, it will be interesting to see what Criterion Games will come up with to cater to fan expectations while looking to grow the Need for Speed series.
