Three-Point shooting has been a tough place for many years during NBA 2K22. In competitions against other players, three-point shooting is so overpowered that teams don't play anywhere except for the perimeter. A two-point bucket is generally considered a failed possession by most of the community.

Yet in MyCareer, the AI is so automatically locked in against the three-point bomb that splashing one seemed like a genuine impossibility. Thankfully, there have been several adjustments made to allow player defenders to handle it better while also reducing the ability of the AI to squish the shot entirely. With a whole new system in place for shooting threes in NBA 2K22, there's also a brand new build that does it best.

Updated on October 24th, 2021 by Hodey Johns: It's great that this guide has led to so many players hitting from deep, but it was revisited to see if there were any optimizations. Specifically, to see if there could be a way to keep this build shooting perfect for long-range, keep all thirty shooting badges, and yet still be able to play some defense and do some playmaking. After some trial and error, this build has been updated. It's not quite as fast as the old build (though it is still fast), but what it lacks in speed, it makes up for with extra height and better abilities to play defense and snag rebounds.

Play A Shooting Guard

NBA 2K22 Choosing To Play A Shooting Guard

The best three-point shooters have been the bigs for the last several years, but with a few new badges, animations, and an improved shot meter, shooting guards are back to being the best at throwing down the three. Height is still important and stretch bigs can still do a great job, but the guard has an advantage this year.

Catching and shooting are more fluid and faster, which is why playing with a shooting guard is preferred over the point guard. And speed is core to getting off the shot from the right place, so the speedy two guard has an advantage over the centers in finding the open shot.

Go All In On Shooting

NBA 2K22 Picking The Shooting Pie Chart

While speed, as mentioned, is important, it doesn't mean a thing if players can't land the ball. Although defense/rebounding, playmaking, and finishing pie charts all yield better quickness, the extra badges and maximum accuracy that comes with the heavy shooting skill breakdown are too good to pass up.

The guard position has enough quickness on its own; this is not a slow build. A maximum of 95 to the Three-Point Shot is required. Players with gold badges and a score in the 80s can hit an occasional deep ball, but this build hits it consistently. This is not a build that settles for being the best shooting guard alive; it demands to be the best shooting guard of all time.

Max Out Agility

NBA 2K22 Picking The Pie Chart With The Most Agility

This is the part where players can add a ton of guilt-free speed. Strength and vertical are important for some positions, but the three-point specialist needs neither one. There are defensive elements at play here, but the speed for agility makes a much bigger difference than the other attributes.

By setting agility to the maximum, players will get more of what they want: Catching and releasing wide-open shots. So long as the shooting guard chooses the right team, they won't ask the player to be in a position that requires anything but their agility.

NBA 2K22 Getting A Green Shot From The Three Point Line

Usually, it's best to make a build that focuses on hitting certain badge quantities. But since this is a shooting build, none of the finishing skills matter. Without these in play, the other three categories can all be safely maximized without much thought.

RELATED: NBA 2K22: Beginner Tips For MyTeamThere is some conversation to be had about sacrificing playmaking or defense in exchange for the ability to play under the net. But even with full investment, because of the pie chart, finishing is not a strong suit with this build. Besides, building this way allows the player to get triple-doubles thanks to rebounding and some of the best playmaking badges.

Adjusting Physicals

NBA 2K22 Ideal Height For Three Point Shooting

It's possible to go above 6'5" and shorten up wingspan later to maintain that perfect three-point shooting, but there are two problems with that, one of which will be addressed here. Any taller than 6'5" and teams will start moving the player in to play small forward or power forward. This build gets wrecked against the best small forwards in the league.

NBA 2K22 Ideal Weight For A Three Point Shooter

Bringing weight down only hurts three things and two of those (strength and post control) are irrelevant to the build. The interior defense will suffer and it can be situationally useful, but 46 is enough to handle these rare moments, especially with a 6'5" stature and the amount of speed crammed into this build.

At 83.3", this is just one tick up from the default, increasing a ton of stats and only hurting the post-fade attribute, which is useless to this build. It also gives players a matchup advantage against standard shooting guards while keeping speed nice and high. Add in a few of the best defense/rebounding badges and this is a formidable opponent on defense.

Be A Spot Up Shooter

NBA 2K22 Choosing The Spot Up Shooter Takeover

There is a reasonable debate to be had over whether the Shot Creator or Spot Up Shooter is better. For this build, take the Spot Up Shooter. It's better in catch and release situations, which is an event that happens rather frequently for the shooting guard.

Point guards are a different story as shooting off of the dribble is their main event, but that's a completely different build and, even if it's done right, it's doesn't get that maximum three-point bomb like this one does.

Critical Badges

  • Hot Zone Hunter
  • Limitless Spot-Up
  • Slippery Off Ball
  • Lucky #7
  • Deadeye
  • Catch & Shoot

Slippery Off Ball is perhaps the most crucial skill to the build, allowing players to get open when they don't have the ball.

Hot Zone Hunter is a colossal advantage against AI opponents, but actual players will catch on if a shooter keeps tossing it up from the same place on the court. If the plan is to play mostly against human enemies, switch this badge off for something else.

Sniper is another debatable badge. It's great for players who can consistently hit the green, but for those who are still designing the perfect custom jumper, it might be best to use something else.

  • Glue Hands

One new addition to the game this year is imperative for three-point specialists. The tooltip on Glue Hands suggests that it speeds up the time between catching and dribbling, but testing reveals that Glue Hands also speeds up the animation on catching and shooting. Getting off an even faster shot is obviously an enormous advantage.

NBA 2K22 Breaking One Hundred Points With A Three Ball

In a test game, this build proved capable of beating Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game record before the final quarter on Pro difficulty. That might sound easy to newcomers, but until this year, trying to sink threes was borderline impossible in MyCareer. Enjoy all of the new upgrades!

NBA 2K22 was released on September 9th, 2021, and is available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
