The Last of Us, the hotly anticipated video game series coming to prestige drama network HBO on January 15, 2023 has fans salivating for every last morsel of information before the show drops and democratizes the information everybody has about what’s coming and what to expect.

Naughty Dog just dropped an clip with The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie in the series, that aired on an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and airing, presumably, live.

The clip shows off Ellie in a stunning fashion, putting forward her bravery and the sass she uses to keep herself going in a world that’s already ended. In it Ellie and a pair studying her standing in an empty bedroom in a decrepit Victorian house, with Ellie chained to the wall. Ellie kicks her food tray toward the woman holding the clipboard who is wanting her to count to ten. When she rushes they immediately order her to start again, going slowly. Ellie begins the count again: one…two…three…and so on until she gets to eight. Then, instead of saying nine and ten she holds up her middle finger and tells the pair, “**** you.” The clip ends there.

The interview with Kimmel highlights Ramsey’s brief but spectacular career in not only this series but in HBO’s mega-popular Game of Thrones where she played Lady Lyanna Mormont, one of the fiercest defenders of the kingdoms of the North, a role she first started when she was eleven years old. She revealed in a humorous anecdote that she first heard of her character’s death through her mom excitedly reading the scripting and telling her she died to which Kimmel replied that he’d never heard his mom say that to him. Ramsey drily replies that there’s still time. Turning to the new show, she described how she and Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian) who plays Joel, found comradery in being killed off on Game of Thrones, and confirms most of what fans knew regarding the apocalyptic setting and clicker “zombies.”

The ten-episode series is adapted from the smash hit 2013 survival horror game of the same name by Naughty Dog is written by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and Neil Druckmann (who wrote/directed the game and its sequel, The Last of Us Part II). Along with Pascal and Ramsey, the series stars Gabriel Luna (Agents of Shield) as Joel’s younger brother, Tommy, Anna Torv (Fringe) as Joel’s partner in smuggling, Tess, and Merle Dandridge as the Firefly resistance leader, Marlene (Alyx Vance in Half-Life 2). In the game, Joel, a father who has lost his family, teams up with Ellie, a girl without one of her own, who has a resistance to the ongoing cordyceps virus that just might save humanity—if Joel isn’t too selfish to let her go.

The Last of Us airs January 15, 2023.
