Many Naruto villains fall into the wicked and vile category, and they have committed heinous crimes throughout the series. Usually, when it boils down to who is the most evil character in the series, names such as Obito, Madara, and Kaguya immediately come to mind. But, they are not nearly as evil as Zetsu, who is undoubtedly the most sinister character in the series.

The Creation

Black Zetsu from Naruto

The creation of Zetsu is directly linked to the defeat of Kaguya Otsutsuki by the hands of her sons, Hagoromo and Hamura. The two brothers sealed her away with the help of the Six Paths Chibaku Tensei. Despite being sealed, Kaguya did not lose her will to survive. Her will manifested in the form of Black Zetsu. Black Zetsu had only one aim— to revive Kaguya Otsutsuki and to achieve this goal, it was willing to go to any extremes.

Manipulating Indra Otsutstuki

After sealing away his mother, Hagoromo tried teaching people about ninshu and other things. Eventually, Hagoromo had two sons, Indra and Ashura. Indra was the more talented of the two and everyone expected him to be named the successor to Hagoromo's position. However, the Sage of Six Paths had other ideas. Instead of giving Indra the position, Hagoromo made Asura his successor. This decision surprised everyone, and it started a rivalry that would last for centuries, and it would engulf the entire world.

After hearing his father's decision, the prodigal Indra went to the woods, where Black Zetsu was waiting. It figured this was the best time to manipulate Indra, and after a great deal of convincing, it worked. Indra decided to go to war with Asura Otsutsuki. Unfortunately for Indra, Asura was not a weakling and the latter emerged victorious in their fight. Indra retreated and swore vengeance against Asura.

Misguiding Madara and The Others

Black Zetsu betrays Madara

After Indra's failed attempt to overthrow his brother, the rivalry between the two was passed down to their descendants. Hashirama was Ashura's reincarnate, while Madara was Indra's. When they were kids, Madara and Hashirama were close, and soon they became the best of friends. The problems between the two started after they founded the Hidden Leaf. The people living in the Hidden Leaf did not like Madara, and Tobirama's comments didn't help the situation either.

This led to Madara leaving the village and going away to plan the downfall of Hashirama and everyone else. Madara came across the Uchiha Stone Tablet, which had been left behind by Hagoromo, but Black Zetsu tampered with it. When Madara read the tablet, he knew what he had to do. He began plotting to launch the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Madara's final fight against Hashirama ended in defeat, but the Uchiha managed to gain the highly coveted cells of his rival. So, Madara waited until he found the right candidate, which happened when he saw Obito.

In order to corrupt Obito, Madara and Zetsu made a plan to use Rin. Madara ordered the kidnapping of Rin and sealed the Three-Tails inside her. They also placed a cursed seal on her, which would cause the tailed beast to come out once Rin returned to the Hidden Leaf. She was against going back to the village, so she asked Kakashi to kill her, but Kakashi would never do such a thing. At the time when they were fighting the enemies, Obito made his way to their location.

As Kakashi unleashed the Chidori, Rin threw herself in front of the attack, which led to her death. This incident caused Obito a great deal of grief, and he vowed to create a world that was devoid of suffering. Madara knew that he had Obito in his grasp and he entrusted his mission to the young Uchiha. Eventually, Obito headed the Akatsuki, and he was responsible for starting the Fourth Great Ninja War.

Responsible For Thousands Of Deaths

Black Zetsu takes over Obito's body

In most debates, Madara, Obito, and other big-name characters are associated with the deaths of people, however, in reality, it was all Black Zetsu's doing. It was responsible for causing problems between Indra and Ashura. Then he continued to manipulate Madara, who had to betray his best friend.

Black Zetsu betrayed Madara towards the end of the Fourth Great Ninja War in order to revive Kaguya. It worked from the shadows, so no one could find out its true motives. Black Zetsu was devoid of any emotions, and this made it ruthless. It would have received more recognition from the fans, but since it barely got involved in fights, and it didn't have a motive of its own, the fans didn't seem to care much about it. Luckily, it was sealed alongside Kaguya by Naruto Uzumaki.
