Being one of the many clans that make up the Hidden Leaf Village, the Aburame Clan has been sidelined for most of the Naruto series, despite possessing a ninjutsu that is unlike no other. Even with the distinctive insect-based fighting style, the Aburame Clan has only been shown a handful of times throughout the series, with their unique powers being highly underutilized. However, the clan’s reputation is redeemed by one of its forbidden techniques – the Jar of Poison Jutsu.

The forbidden technique has only one known user, Torune Aburame, who has been using the technique while under Kabuto’s control as a reanimated shinobi. Even though his plan to use the jutsu was foiled by Shino and Naruto, the destructive nature of the technique is clearly depicted. Moreover, the horrid nature of the technique further makes the jutsu quite terrifying, as the prerequisite to using the technique is gathering a large number of corpses. The Naruto series has clearly set a precedent for the Aburame bloodline’s power with this unparalleled technique.

The Aburame’s Forbidden Technique: Jar of Poison Jutsu

Forbidden Jar of Poison Jutsu

Being a forbidden technique that is capable of such large-scale damage, the Jar of Poison Jutsu has a few prerequisites that are necessary for it to be used. The jutsu user primarily needs to possess Rinkaichu, a specific type of nano-sized venomous beetles that are extremely rare to find, even within the Aburame Clan. These venomous beetles are so poisonous that contact with the skin for even a millisecond is enough for the person to get infected and eventually succumb to the beetles’ poison.

The Rinkaichi thrive on human flesh, yet they are unable to spread through airborne methods. The Jar of Poison Jutsu negates this limitation by allowing the venomous beetles to spread through a massive poison cloud, ensuing large scale contamination. The jutsu, however, does not distinguish between friend or foe, killing all that lay in its path. The only ones that could survive its effect are those that wield the antibodies to the beetle’s poison, something that only Torune and Shino possess.

How Does the Jar of Poison Jutsu Work

The technique requires an intricate set-up, and its end result cannot be achieved instantly. First, the caster must accumulate a large number of corpses in an enclosed area, preferably a deep pit. The corpses are then infected with Rinkaichi, which rapidly multiply and grow within the bodies. The mixture of gas released from decaying flesh and the multiplying Rinkaichi result in an overwhelming explosion, releasing a gigantic poison cloud capable of killing any living being in its wake.

The gas released by the decaying flesh is concentrated within the pit with the help of a sealing barrier, which also serves the purpose of stimulating the Rinkaichi’s growth within the flesh. Once the jutsu has been cast, the only way to stop it is by killing the caster, which would result in the barrier being erased and the jar of poison subdued.

Who Can Use the Jutsu

Users of the Jar of Poison

Only those that possess the venomous Rinkaichi can use this jutsu, meaning Torune Aburame, one of Danzo’s Anbu bodyguards, is the only one capable of casting this forbidden technique. Since he naturally produces these nano-sized venomous beetles, Torune has enough power to infect heaps of corpses to set up the jutsu. Shino could also be another potential user of this jutsu as he had sampled Torune’s Rinkaichi and produced his own. However, he still does not possess enough Rinkaichi, or the mastery needed to cast a jutsu capable of such large-scale destruction.

Why Is the Jar of Poison Jutsu a Forbidden Technique?

Torune's Poison Jutsu

The question now arises as to why the Jar of Poison Jutsu has been deemed a forbidden technique. The primary reason for the technique being forbidden is the daunting prerequisite for using the jutsu, which involves gathering a massive amount of corpses to multiply the Rinkaichi. Garnering dead bodies of shinobi just for the sake of this jutsu goes against the Leaf’s moral ethics, forcing the jutsu to be banned and forbidden.

Another reason is the jutsu’s destructive nature, one that does not discern between an ally or an enemy. Since the poison cloud encompasses a large area, it is likely that allies would also get caught in the smoke, resulting in friendly casualties. Bearing such a high risk, the jutsu was simply prohibited from being used. Nevertheless, the unfettered power that hides behind this secret jutsu is a testament to the Aburame Clan’s true potential, one that the Naruto series tends to overlook.
