The Naruto franchise has clearly set a precedent that ocular techniques are a superior form of jutsu, yet even within this framework of power lies a drastic difference between the strength of each Dojutsu. While its common knowledge that the three great Dojutsu, the Sharingan, Byakugan, and Rinnegan, are the strongest of all visual techniques, an even greater power exists that triumphs over these three Dojutsu – the Rinne-Sharingan.

The Rinne-Sharingan possesses an unfathomable amount of power, one that can neither be comprehended nor controlled by a regular shinobi. The only known users of this ominous power are Madara Uchiha and Kaguya Otsutsuki, who showcased this divine power’s true potential. Being the predecessor of both the Rinnegan and Sharingan, the Rinne-Sharingan possesses the power of both Dojutsu, which speaks volume of its great power. Delving deeper into the details of this visual technique reveals how strong it truly is.

The Rinne-Sharingan’s Origin

God Tree Naruto

To be able to truly comprehend how powerful the Rinne-Sharingan is, it is essential to first understand how it originated and where this power came from. The roots of this visual jutsu can be traced back to the God Tree, a chakra-absorbing tree that has been hailed as the origin of chakra in the human world. The fruit of this tree manifests every thousand years, and the one who eats the fruit is bound to receive unfettered power, turning them into a god-like being.

Kaguya awoke the Rinne-Sharingan through this method, as she ate the fruit of the God Tree, resulting in a third eye forming on her forehead. Ten-Tails bears the same Rinne-Sharingan, since the tailed-beast itself is the God Tree. Madara awakened his Rinne-Sharingan by absorbing Ten-Tails and becoming its Jinchuriki, as he had practically absorbed the God Tree’s power.

The Rinne-Sharingan’s Power

Amenominaka Kaguya

Being the predecessor of both the Rinnegan and the Sharingan, the Rinne-Sharingan has the cumulative power of both Dojutsu, and can cast jutsu that are beyond the limit of either one. It has the Sharingan’s reality-altering and genjutsu abilities, and the Rinnegan’s Six Path powers, turning the wielder into a truly omnipotent being. The most powerful ability of this Dojutsu is the Infinite Tsukuyomi, a genjutsu that uses the moon as an eye, casting a perpetual genjutsu over the entire world.

The Infinite Tsukuyomi could be considered the pinnacle of the Rinne-Sharingan’s power, yet the ocular jutsu has a few other techniques that further exemplify its position as the strongest Dojutsu in the entire series. One of Kaguya’s techniques through the Rinne-Sharingan is the Amenominaka, the ability to transport herself and those around her to alternate dimensions. This teleportation technique could be considered a genjutsu of sorts, but instead of forming an imaginary dimension, Kaguya can manifest and shift actual dimensions – an extreme form of time-space ninjutsu. Amenominaka is one of Kaguya’s Kekkei Mora, which are a direct result of bearing the Rinne-Sharingan, meaning the ability can be attributed to the visual jutsu.

Another Kekkei Mora that is directly linked to the Rinne-Sharingan is the Yomotsu Hirasaka, another time-space jutsu that allows the caster to rip through the fabric of time and space to instantaneously teleport between two set points. Kaguya used this ability multiple times throughout her battle with Naruto, employing its teleporting abilities to dodge incoming attacks. This technique could be considered similar to the Amenominaka, yet it is much slower and only teleports the caster itself. Since it requires less chakra, the ability is useful for quickly dodging direct attacks and ninjutsu.

Who Can Awaken the Rinne-Sharingan?

Madara Rinne Sharingan

Being the most revered Dojutsu in the entire Naruto Universe, it makes sense that the Rinne-Sharingan is impossible to awaken through natural means. The only known method of awakening it is either through eating the God Tree’s divine fruit, as in Kaguya’s case, or by absorbing the God Tree’s chakra and having the Rinnegan, as seen in Madara’s case. Many fans have speculated that Obito had also absorbed the God Tree’s chakra by becoming the Ten-Tails’ Jinchuriki, yet he was never able to awaken the Dojutsu.

This has been explained through the Uchiha’s Stone Tablet, which explains that to awaken the Rinne-Sharingan, the one who possesses the Rinne must draw near the moon, resulting in an eye reflecting on the moon, casting the infinite dream. From this inscription, it can be ascertained that to awaken the Rinne-Sharingan, one must possess the DNA of both Asura and Indra (in the form of the Rinnegan), and must draw near the moon, the same place where Kaguya was initially sealed. Through this method, Madara became the only other character in the entire Naruto series to wield the infamous Rinne-Sharingan, becoming even more omnipotent than before.
