Kodansha has announced Monday that an anime adaptation of My Life As Inukai-san's Dog would be coming to audiences in 2023. The announcement has stirred controversy over the potential themes of beastiality that are presented throughout the manga.

The manga is an ecchi — an erotic comedy — that is seen through the first-person point of view of a dog. The main character is suddenly a pet of Karen Inukai who as the official manga's website describes it, "loves dogs too much." The story in general ends up with a strange love triangle with a dog where Inukai-san constantly does strange sexually charged acts with her pet.

Furukawa Gosei, the creator of the manga said on the anime's official website, "It’s mainly a piece from the dog’s perspective. I think you will enjoy the feeling of being held by a girl. The heroine’s thoughts and feelings are not described from a first-person point of view. I can’t wait to see how the movements and voices make me feel!"

The official Twitter announcement of the anime adaptation already has over 180 Quote Tweets with users in both Japan and other countries questioning why it would be chosen for such a release due to its controversial content.

The Problematic Elements Of The Manga

It has been arguable that My Life As Inukai-san's Dog is an attempt to make a likable zoophilic main character as an attempt to show a positive interpretation of zoophilia. The character performs many acts that could be described as beastiality within the manga's pages including sucking a dog's tail as if it is a phallus, trying to entice the dog into being aroused by her in order to seduce her, and asking the dog to lick her feet.

It's not just Karen who is into the dog as a potential weird romantic partner either. As the story involves a love triangle with a canine, there is another girl named Tsukishiro in the story as well. She is shown masturbating to thoughts of the dog she calls senpai. The two girls even compete in a sexually charged challenge to attempt to decide who is the real owner of the dog.

While anime is no stranger to producing weird content, including sexually charged content, My Life As Inukai-san's Dog seems like a step too far to many fans of the genre. It is possible that the adaptation may try to remove more of the adult aspects of the story to focus more on the mystery of why the main protagonist is turned into a dog to begin with, but there is no way to know until it releases.

As of now, there is no word yet on who may air the anime adaptation of My Life As Inukai-san's Dog or who may have it available for streaming. The manga for the series has been released since 2020 and currently has four volumes. It releases in Suiyobi no Sirius, Shonen Magazine R, and on YanMaga Web sites.
