The highly anticipated live-action adaptation of My Hero Academia, first announced in 2018, is finally getting more details and heading towards shooting. The iconic anime series has grown in popularity over the past decade with recent releases like the box office hit film My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission. The next phase for the series is starting to come to fruition with some exciting news.

Deadline recently reported who will be directing the live-action My Hero Academia film: Shinsuke Sato. Sato is known for his work on live-action adaptations such as Death Note, Bleach, and Alice in Borderland. With such an incredible reputation working on these anime adaptations, Sato is sure to provide an excellent new addition to the Academia universe. Notably, this film will be Sato's English-language movie debut, since the franchise has such a hold over Western audiences.

Unfortunately, no release date or any other details for the live-action My Hero Academia film have been released yet. However, should the project follow the storyline of the source material, it will center around Izuku, who will not be prevented from entering the hero academies just because he was not born with a "quirk." Quirks, in the realm of My Hero Academia, give characters various superpowers. Seemingly, the film will either act as a prequel or simply dive deeper into Izuku's tumultuous back story. Either way, the film will certainly appeal to the series' fanbase and those already familiar with the story. Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter will oversee the project for Legendary, while Ryosuke Yoritomi will do the same for the manga publisher Shueisha.

My Hero Academia

Despite the show's immense popularity, some have criticized My Hero Academia for its recent efforts and the fifth season of the show. Anime shows often have long run times since most are based on serialized manga series and some have argued My Hero Academia has failed to keep up the pace. The franchise's latest attempts with the World Heroes' Mission film and the upcoming live-action feature might be the boost the series needs.

Live-action has been slowly entering the anime realm more often in past years. Franchises like Resident Evil have mastered it, while others like One Piece are testing it out for the first time. Live-action films bring a new level of depth to characters and give them a personification outside of the sometimes highly unrealistic scope that comes with animation.

The news of a live-action film is exciting and fans of anime will certainly look forward to seeing who will play their favorite characters in person. With a director of the My Hero Academia live-action film set, more details hopefully will be coming soon.

My Hero Academia series is now streaming on Crunchyroll.
